Foxes
Foxes are members of the canine family. The canine family include jackals,
wolves, and dogs. They are in that family because of their thin legs, lithe frame,
pointed nose, and bushy tails. Foxes are social animals and they are flexible
animals. They live in North America, Europe, Asia, and North Africa. A fennec fox
gets no bigger than a cat. Itgets about 9 inches tall but most foxes are 34 inches
and their tail can get up to 12 to 24 inches. Foxes can weigh as little as 1.5 pounds
and weigh as much as 24 pounds. A group of foxes are called a leash, skulk, or
earth. They are nocturnal, but sometimes they hunt in the day if they feel safe
wherethey are. Foxes see very well. They can run 45 MPH.
Foxes live in forests, mountains, grassland, and deserts. They live in
barrows (or dens), thefoxes make several exits so that if a predator comes in they
can escape easily. Bobcats, wolves, and lynx hunt fox sometimes. The wolves will
make a circle around the fox so the fox can’tescape, then the wolves kill it and
eat it (most wolf packs try to kill a big fox so maybethey could all get a meal).
Foxes eat lizards, rodents, earthworms, fish, mice, fruit, snakes, rabbits, and
grasshoppers. They willalso eat someinvertebrates. Foxes are very interesting
animals.
