The name of this book is Message of the Mountain. The author is Matilda
Nordtvedt. The main character is John. His two sister’s names are Lois and Hilda. His one
brother’s name was Sigurd. They moved beside a big mountain. It reminded them of God.
When John arrived at his new school, with his sisters, he met a boy named Marvin.
When school was over, Marvin took John to some train tracks beside the school. Another
boy named Pete was there. Pete gave Marvin some tobacco. Pete told John to try some.
When John tried smoking, he really didn’t like it; but he didn’t want tell Marvin.
One day when John was smoking with Marvin, Marvin said that John had to buy
some tobacco too. John told Marvin, “I do not have any money.” Marvin told John to
steal some. Marvin and John made a plan to steal some tobacco from a store. Hilda
heard them. John told Hilda that he would steal her some candy if she did not tell.
When John and Marvin went to the store, John walked out while Marvin was still
trying to steal some tobacco. Marvin got caught; but John did not. John did not see
Marvin at school the next day. He saw him after that though.
A couple of days later, John told the store owner that he helped Marvin steal the
tobacco. He told his mom and dad too. John’s parents prayed for him and forgave him.
John worked for the store owner for a long time too.
John went home with Marvin one day after school. When they opened the door of
Marvin’s house, his dad was dead. A doctor came and said that Marvin’s dad had
overdosed. Since Marvin did not have anyone to live with, he lived with John.
Marvin’s aunt sent a letter saying that she would come get him and let him live with
her. Since no-one wanted Marvin to go, they all planned a trip to the mountain beside
their house. When Marvin’s aunt came, they asked her if she wanted to go to the
mountains too. She went with them.
After they got to the mountains and walked a little bit, they stopped and ate.
John’s mom said that the children can walk a little bit farther. When the two girls got
tired, they rested beside a creek. After the two boys said they would go a little bit
farther, they fell down the mountain a little bit. They were lost! After a long time, the
boys found Hilda and Lois. After a couple more days of all of them being lost, they found
their parents.
When they got home, they were all talking about how they did not want Marvin to
go home. When Marvin’s aunt heard this, she said, “I do not want to make any one sad.”
She told Marvin that he could stay with John if he wanted. He said he did.
