CIRCLE
• A circle is a
collection of all
points in a plane
which are at a
constant distance
(radius) from a
fixed point
(centre).
WHEN A CIRCLE AND A LINE ARE
GIVEN IN A PLANE
WHEN A CIRCLE AND A LINE ARE
GIVEN IN A PLANE.
• In the Fig. 4.1 (i), the line PQ and the circle have no
common point. In this case, PQ is called a non-intersecting
line with respect to the circle.
• In Fig. 4.1 (ii), there are two common points A and B that
the line PQ and the circle have. In this case, we call the line
PQ a secant of the circle.
• In Fig. 4.1 (iii), there is only one point A which is common
to the line PQ and the circle. In this case, the line is called a
tangent to the circle.
TANGENT TO A CIRCLE
TANGENT TO A CIRCLE
• A tangent* to a circle is a line that intersects the circle at only one
point.
• The tangent to a circle is a special case of the secant, when the two
end points of its corresponding chord coincide.
• *The word ‘tangent’ comes from the Latin word ‘tangere’, which
means to touch and was introduced by the Danish mathematician
Thomas Fineke in 1583.
• in Fig. 4.3 (ii). These are the tangents to the circle parallel to the
given secant PQ. This also helps you to see that there cannot be
more than two tangents parallel to a given secant.
• The common point
of the tangent and
the circle is called
the point of contact
and the tangent is
said to touch the
circle at the common
point.
• Theorem 4.1 : The tangent at any point of a circle is
perpendicular to the radius through the point of
contact.
• Proof : We are given a circle with centre O and a
tangent XY to the circle at a point P. We need to prove
that OP is perpendicular to XY. Take a point Q on XY
other than P and join OQ. The point Q must lie
outside the circle. if Q lies inside the circle, XY will
become a secant and not a tangent to the circle).
Therefore, OQ is longer than the radius OP of the
circle. That is, OQ > OP
• Since this happens for every point on the line XY
except the point P, OP is the shortest of all the
distances of the point O to the points of XY. So OP is
perpendicular to XY
•Remarks :
•1. By theorem above, we can also conclude that at
any point on a circle there can be one and only one
tangent.
•2. The line containing the radius through the point
of contact is also sometimes called the ‘normal’ to
the circle at the point
EXERCISE 4.1
• 1. How many tangents can a circle have?
 A circle can have infinite number of tangents because a circle have
infinite number of points on it and at every point a tangent can be drawn.
• 2. Fill in the blanks :
• (i) A tangent to a circle intersects it in one point (s).
• (ii) A line intersecting a circle in two points is called a secant .
• (iii) A circle can have two parallel tangents at the most.
• (iv) The common point of a tangent to a circle and the circle is called
point of contact.
•3. A tangent PQ at a point P of a circle of radius 5
cm meets a line through the centre O at a point Q
so that OQ = 12 cm. Length PQ is : (A) 12 cm (B)
13 cm (C) 8.5 cm (D) 119 cm. 4. Draw a circle and
two lines parallel to a given line such that one is a
tangent and the other, a secant to the circle.
4. Draw a circle and two lines parallel to a given line
such that one is a tangent and the other, a secant to the
circle.
Number of Tangents from a Point on
a Circle
• Case 1 : There is no tangent to a circle passing
through a point lying inside the circle.
• Case 2 : There is one and only one tangent to a
circle passing through a point lying on the circle.
• Case 3 : There are exactly two tangents to a
circle through a point lying outside the circle.
• The length of the segment of the tangent from
the external point P and the point of contact with
the circle is called the length of the tangent from
the point P to the circle.
• Theorem 4.2 : The lengths of tangents drawn from an external
point to a circle are equal.
• Proof : We are given a circle with centre O, a point P lying
outside the circle and two tangents PQ, PR on the circle from
P (see Fig. 4.7). We are required to prove that PQ = PR.
• For this, we join OP, OQ and OR. Then angle OQP and angle
ORP are right angles, because these are angles between the
radii and tangents, and according to Theorem 4.1 they are
right angles.
• Now in right triangles OQP and ORP,
OQ = OR (Radii of the same circle)
OP = OP (Common)
Therefore ∆OQP ≅ ∆ORP (RHS)
This gives PQ = PR (CPCT)
Exercie 4.2
5) Prove that the perpendicular at the point of
contact to the tangent to a circle passes through
the centre.
10) Prove that the angle between the two
tangents drawn from an external point to a circle
is supplementary to the angle subtended by the
line-segment joining the points of contact at the
centre.
•12) A triangle ABC is
drawn to circumscribe a
circle of radius 4 cm such
that the segments BD and
DC into which BC is
divided by the point of
contact D are of lengths 8
cm and 6 cm respectively
(see Fig. 4.14). Find the
sides AB and AC.
•13. Prove that opposite sides of a
quadrilateral circumscribing a circle
subtend supplementary angles at the centre
of the circle
HOMEWORK
1. The length of a tangent from a point A at distance 5
cm from the centre of the circle is 4 cm. Find the
radius of the circle. 7.
2. Two concentric circles are of radii 5 cm and 3 cm.
Find the length of the chord of the larger
3) Prove that the parallelogram circumscribing a
circle is a rhombus circle which touches the smaller
circle.

Class 10th Chapter 4 Circles.pptx

  • 1. B.J.P.S Samiti’s M.V.HERWADKAR ENGLISH MEDIUM HIGH SCHOOL CLASS 10th : CIRCLES Program: Semester: Course: NAME OF THE COURSE Staff Name: VINAYAK PATIL 1
  • 2. CIRCLE • A circle is a collection of all points in a plane which are at a constant distance (radius) from a fixed point (centre).
  • 3. WHEN A CIRCLE AND A LINE ARE GIVEN IN A PLANE
  • 4. WHEN A CIRCLE AND A LINE ARE GIVEN IN A PLANE. • In the Fig. 4.1 (i), the line PQ and the circle have no common point. In this case, PQ is called a non-intersecting line with respect to the circle. • In Fig. 4.1 (ii), there are two common points A and B that the line PQ and the circle have. In this case, we call the line PQ a secant of the circle. • In Fig. 4.1 (iii), there is only one point A which is common to the line PQ and the circle. In this case, the line is called a tangent to the circle.
  • 5. TANGENT TO A CIRCLE
  • 6. TANGENT TO A CIRCLE • A tangent* to a circle is a line that intersects the circle at only one point. • The tangent to a circle is a special case of the secant, when the two end points of its corresponding chord coincide. • *The word ‘tangent’ comes from the Latin word ‘tangere’, which means to touch and was introduced by the Danish mathematician Thomas Fineke in 1583. • in Fig. 4.3 (ii). These are the tangents to the circle parallel to the given secant PQ. This also helps you to see that there cannot be more than two tangents parallel to a given secant.
  • 7. • The common point of the tangent and the circle is called the point of contact and the tangent is said to touch the circle at the common point.
  • 8. • Theorem 4.1 : The tangent at any point of a circle is perpendicular to the radius through the point of contact. • Proof : We are given a circle with centre O and a tangent XY to the circle at a point P. We need to prove that OP is perpendicular to XY. Take a point Q on XY other than P and join OQ. The point Q must lie outside the circle. if Q lies inside the circle, XY will become a secant and not a tangent to the circle). Therefore, OQ is longer than the radius OP of the circle. That is, OQ > OP • Since this happens for every point on the line XY except the point P, OP is the shortest of all the distances of the point O to the points of XY. So OP is perpendicular to XY
  • 9. •Remarks : •1. By theorem above, we can also conclude that at any point on a circle there can be one and only one tangent. •2. The line containing the radius through the point of contact is also sometimes called the ‘normal’ to the circle at the point
  • 10. EXERCISE 4.1 • 1. How many tangents can a circle have?  A circle can have infinite number of tangents because a circle have infinite number of points on it and at every point a tangent can be drawn. • 2. Fill in the blanks : • (i) A tangent to a circle intersects it in one point (s). • (ii) A line intersecting a circle in two points is called a secant . • (iii) A circle can have two parallel tangents at the most. • (iv) The common point of a tangent to a circle and the circle is called point of contact.
  • 11. •3. A tangent PQ at a point P of a circle of radius 5 cm meets a line through the centre O at a point Q so that OQ = 12 cm. Length PQ is : (A) 12 cm (B) 13 cm (C) 8.5 cm (D) 119 cm. 4. Draw a circle and two lines parallel to a given line such that one is a tangent and the other, a secant to the circle.
  • 12. 4. Draw a circle and two lines parallel to a given line such that one is a tangent and the other, a secant to the circle.
  • 13. Number of Tangents from a Point on a Circle
  • 14. • Case 1 : There is no tangent to a circle passing through a point lying inside the circle. • Case 2 : There is one and only one tangent to a circle passing through a point lying on the circle. • Case 3 : There are exactly two tangents to a circle through a point lying outside the circle. • The length of the segment of the tangent from the external point P and the point of contact with the circle is called the length of the tangent from the point P to the circle.
  • 15. • Theorem 4.2 : The lengths of tangents drawn from an external point to a circle are equal. • Proof : We are given a circle with centre O, a point P lying outside the circle and two tangents PQ, PR on the circle from P (see Fig. 4.7). We are required to prove that PQ = PR. • For this, we join OP, OQ and OR. Then angle OQP and angle ORP are right angles, because these are angles between the radii and tangents, and according to Theorem 4.1 they are right angles. • Now in right triangles OQP and ORP, OQ = OR (Radii of the same circle) OP = OP (Common) Therefore ∆OQP ≅ ∆ORP (RHS) This gives PQ = PR (CPCT)
  • 16. Exercie 4.2 5) Prove that the perpendicular at the point of contact to the tangent to a circle passes through the centre.
  • 17. 10) Prove that the angle between the two tangents drawn from an external point to a circle is supplementary to the angle subtended by the line-segment joining the points of contact at the centre.
  • 18. •12) A triangle ABC is drawn to circumscribe a circle of radius 4 cm such that the segments BD and DC into which BC is divided by the point of contact D are of lengths 8 cm and 6 cm respectively (see Fig. 4.14). Find the sides AB and AC.
  • 19. •13. Prove that opposite sides of a quadrilateral circumscribing a circle subtend supplementary angles at the centre of the circle
  • 20. HOMEWORK 1. The length of a tangent from a point A at distance 5 cm from the centre of the circle is 4 cm. Find the radius of the circle. 7. 2. Two concentric circles are of radii 5 cm and 3 cm. Find the length of the chord of the larger 3) Prove that the parallelogram circumscribing a circle is a rhombus circle which touches the smaller circle.
