Preliminary Design means that part of the Development
Phase where all of the geometric design elements,
including a preliminary estimate of the preferred
design solution, are documented for input to the
Detailed Design Stage.
Preliminary Design in Final year project What things
are required for the project? what is the size of
parts or components? what is the cost of the parts
or components? are these things are available mean
Commercial off-the-Shelf (COTS)? What is the time
required?

OBJECTIVE
Understanding and familiarization with the
Preliminary design of the system and top to down
approach in avionics.
PROCEDURE
PRELIMINARY DESIGN
Preliminary Design means that part of the Development
Phase where all of the geometric design elements,
including a preliminary estimate of the preferred
design solution, are documented for input to the
Detailed Design Stage.
Preliminary Design in Final year project What things
are required for the project? what is the size of
parts or components? what is the cost of the parts
or components? are these things are available mean
Commercial off-the-Shelf (COTS)? What is the time
required?
EXAMPLES
A door size should be equal to the size of the Casing
same as in the Preliminary Design anything should be
required is complete detailed.
Another example of Bricks has its standard size from
the earliest fired bricks appeared in Neolithic China
around 4400 BC at Chengtoushan and still has the same
size its reason is that its size is equal to man hand
size. Man can easily catch it

TOP TO DOWN APPROACH IN AVIONICS:
Top to down approach in avionics is like our
bachelor’s degree in avionics which starts from basic
course courses and ends up on higher courses with a
final year project.
1. All basic courses of
Electronics,Avionics, mathematics and
Programming
2. course related to Integrated
circuits linear algebra,
differentials equation and OOP
3.Complex variable transform
aerodynamic, thermodynamics and
Programming
4.Signal System ,probability
and statistical Instrument &
measurment EMFT and EMS
5.antenna and Wave
propagation, embedded system
and Technical writing
6.Courses related to
Communication and
control system

PRELIMINARY DESIGN OF FYP.
Every student must be crystal clear about the
objective and the deliverables of the fyp.
Those FYPs which are based on the group every student
must be clear about his task and what his main task
is to complete the project.
The person who’s been working on hardware must
discuss with his FYP partner who’s working on the
software part of the project.
Both will discuss the component’s size components
cost, and which part is required as a later
requirement.
The student must know about these things
SYSTEM CONCEPT
The FYP begins by transforming the requirements into
a physical system.
DETAILED LAYOUT
Just only a system engineer knows about the system
internal requirements that things required to convert
this system concept into a physical system. This is
called a detailed layout of the system.
SCHEMATIC
After producing the description of a physical system,
the control systems engineer transforms the physical

system into a schematic diagram. As we know systems
consist of electrical, mechanical, and
electromechanical components
BLOCK DIAGRAM
After completion of the schematic diagram, the system
required a block diagram means how the system takes
its input and how it works?
DETAILED DESIGN
After completing the preliminary design, the system
required its detail designed on the basis of the
preliminary design.
