1. MY NAME IS MISTY SCHULTZ
MY MAJOR IS GENERAL EDUCATION WITH TRANSFER TOWARDS PSYCHOLOGY
2. What motivates me to become an
active participant in our political
system is……
I don’t like how things have
been going within our political
system.
Our political leaders are
people just like us. We have to
get involved in order to be
heard and continue following
up with current events.
I want to help make the future
better for my children. I can do
this by teaching my children
how to make a difference. I
take them with me to vote. It
shows them that even a single
voice can be heard.
3. Things I’ve learned that surprised
me……
Interest groups serve a great purpose in our political system. There is
power in numbers. Our political leaders must listen to us. By joining we can
make a difference.
There were many things I learned but the most impressive thing had to be
the death penalty. I knew it existed but never thought of it. It seems to be
popular in many countries and the cost of the lethal injection seems
outrageous.
4. A political issue important for our
future generations
Fracking:
The arguments on whether or not to continue practicing
fracking will effect our future generations. It poses a
higher risk on our environment. Fracking fluids contain
hazardous chemicals and are being pushed down below
our natural aquifers by very high pressures which are
causing man-made earthquakes that will eventually crack
the earth and create possible leaks. This cartoon
demonstrates the dangers that we face in the near
future. Fracking requires up to 4 million gallons just for a
single well. Our natural fresh water supply is depleting to
fast. We do need fresh water to survive. Our future is at
stake.
5. The role Texas plays in the federal
government
The Judicial System
Texas has the largest
judicial system in the
country.
Texas has over 4,000
justices and judges.
Texas also is #1 in the
nation that practice
executions.
The Criminal Justice
System
Texas is ranked #1 in the
nation that practices
executions.
The death penalty cost
millions however life in
prison without parole will
cost close to the same.
As long as Texas is willing
to continue the
executions the
government will continue
to be influenced.
Border Control and
Immigration
Immigrants make up
about 20% of the Texas
workforce. There are over
1.5 million
undocumented
immigrants in Texas. The
Federation for American
Immigration Reform are
advocates for increased
border control. This
interest group will
influence the federal
government in the future.
6. What I’ve learned
To make a real difference we have to get
involved with our politics somehow.
Joining interest groups are a great place
to start.
One thing I will take with me is the facts
about the U.S. Prison system. How much
money goes into funding for prisons and
how much more we need to support our
education. To improve our future for our
children.
