1. Sound use in films
One of the most important aspects of filming that most
people forget about is sound.
Whether its the soundtrack by a world renowned artist or
even the enhanced footsteps of an actor walking. Sound is
major to any Film. Here is analysis of just sound in some
famous movies from different genres.

2. Comedy:
The Hangover- Blackjack Scene:

Non-Diegetic sound:
Soundtrack- Iko iko coming down the elevator and when Alan counts the cards. Joker and the thief when Alan lays
down the cash and joins in.

Diegetic sound:
Dialogue from Phil, Stu, Alan, Jade and the dealer.
•

On screen (sound reason can be seen on screen):
Dialogue and the cards and chips hitting the table.

Off screen ( sound happens outside frame):
Slot machines are evident in the casino background but can only be heard not seen.

Soundbridge ( soundtrack played over cut to smoothen join):
Iko Iko is played over the cut from the hotel suite to the escalator as the group go into the casino.

Direct sound ( Natural soundtrack of the environment to accompany scene):
Natural casino floor soundtrack of slot machines etc that make the scene more naturalistic.

Foley session:
the sound of the cards and the chips on the table and "racking up"are recorded at the time then the Foley session
ensures the sounds match the images on screen.

3. Thriller:
Lethal Weapon- Mister Sniper Sir
• Non-diegetic sound:
• Soundtrack when Riggs responds to the sniper call and drives off
toward the school.
• Diegetic sound:
• Dialogue from Riggs, other officers and Mr Sniper.
• On screen:
• Dialogue, the car engine and the gun going off.
• Off screen:
• The CB radio voice reporting the shooting and the ricochet off the
bullets as Riggs arrives at the school.
• Soundbridge:
• The cut between Riggs arriving and the sniper shooting has the
soundtrack playing to smoothen the transition.
