Doña Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez Mexican Independence Heroine
Doña Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez, a Mexican patriot as well as a heroine of
Mexico’s Independence War, made her name in history for her bravery when
she risked her own life alerting the rebel insurgents about the discovery of the
Queretaro Conspiracy for Independence.
Thanks to her, Father Miguel Hidalgo moved forward [accelerative] the date in
which the Independence movement would start to the early hours of September
16th, 1810. Without her timely [opportune] notice, the struggle for
independence would have been discovered and the efforts of the conspirators
would never have achieved their ultimate purpose: Mexico’s Independence
from the Spanish Crown.
Maria de la Natividad Giron Josefa Ortiz is best known as Doña Josefa Ortiz de
Dominguez, “La Corregidora” (the Chief Magistrate) of Queretaro. She was the
daughter of the Spaniards Juan Jose Ortiz and Maria Manuela Giron.
She was born in Valladolid– what is now Morelia– in 1768 and was raised in
Mexico City. Her parents died when she was a small child so her older sister
Maria Sotero was granted [agree to] custody. Maria enrolled her sister in the
Colegio de las Vizcaínas, a very prestigious school to which she was accepted
because she was a criolla, creole, that is, the children of Spaniards born in the
New Spain.

While still a college student she met Miguel Dominguez, a widower who often
visited the school. They fell in love and were married secretly in 1791; they had
14 children.
[Widower definition is - a man who has lost his spouse - wife - or partner by death and
usually has not remarried.]
As secretary of the Royal Court, Miguel Dominguez was subsequently
appointed magistrate of Queretaro in 1802 where the family settled. They
quickly won over [persuaded] the sympathy of the Queretaro society of the
time, joining various social groups.
It is well known that Doña Josefa was vehemently against the abuse that the
Spaniards– that is, the European-born Spaniards – exercised over the natives
considering and treating them as second-class citizens. She always identified
with the native’s social problems, for they were relegated to secondary positions
in public administration as well as in the military.

Mexican War of Independence Heroe
José María Morelos y Pavón was born in Valladolid (now Morelia) in 1765.
He was a Mexican religious, military and politician, leader of the revel
Independence war in Mexico. After the death of father Miguel Hidalgo in 1811,
José María assumed leadership of the independence movement and achieved
important victories in the south.
Through the Congress of Anahuac in Chilpancingo, Morelos tried to give
political form to his ideals of equality and justice and he presented them in the
Sentiments of the Nation. This document declared Mexico an independent
nation freed [autonomous] of Spanish rule.
Congress approved on October 22, 1814, in Apatzingán, the first Constitution of
Mexico, but Morelos deemed [estimated] it imperfect because of its
impracticality.
José María Morelos was the son of Creole Juana María Pérez Pavón and Manuel
Morelos a carpenter of indigenous descent.
In 1779 with the death of his father, José María’s life underwent [experienced]
major changes. Under the care of his uncle Felipe Morelos, he moved to
Apatzingán to a farm and where he farmed and herd [drive] mules. The latter
activity provided an income that could support his mother and sister.

When he was 25 years old in 1790, at the insistence of his mother, he left his
uncle Felipe and returned to Valladolid to enroll in the college of San Nicolas.
There he met [contacted, converged] the rector Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla.
He studied Latin and grammar, and two years later continued his studies at the
Tridentate Seminary, where he received instruction in philosophy and rhetoric.
On April 28, 1795 in Mexico City, he received the degree of Bachelor of Arts.
In April 1796 in Uruapan, he accepted an offer to teach rhetoric and grammar
to local children. After several years in the teaching field, on December 20, 1797
at 32 years of age, he was promoted to the priesthood [vocation], obtaining
license to hear confessions, celebrate Mass and preach [sermonize] in Uruapan.

Morelos then began his career as a priest [ecclesiastic] and in March 1799 was
transferred to the parish [community] of Carácuaro, where he lived for more
than a decade living of contributions from parishioners [congregations] and
administering the parish.
During this period and after the death of his mother, he managed and grew the
cattle [in Spanish, ‘ganado (vacuno)’] business he had started with his uncle; he
transferred ownership of the family home to his sister and managed the estate
[property] of his mother. Also at this time he had two illegitimate children.

In October 1810, knowing of the uprising [revolution] of Father Hidalgo, he
decided to join him. During his visit, Hidalgo, asked him to head [command]
south to the coast and gather troops to capture the port of Acapulco.
On October 25 accompanied by little more than twenty men, Morelos left
Carácuaro to Acapulco as Hidalgo’s lieutenant [substitute].
For five years Jose Maria Morelos fought as an insurgent. He headed four
military campaigns in addition to his work as a great political and social thinker.
He was known as a military genius, cruel and ruthless [unfeeling], able to stand
and defeat the Spanish army that significantly outnumbered [be more
numerous than] his men.
The insurgents suffered several defeats and on November 5, 1815 Colonel
Manuel de la Concha captured Morelos in Temazlaca. He was taken to Mexico
City in shackles [restrictions] where he was tried and executed by firing squad
[squadron] on December 22, 1815 in San Cristobal Ecatepec.
Vicente Guerrero continued the Independence movement.
Jose María Morelos y Pavón is a national hero. In his honor, the state of Morelos
and city of Morelia are named after him and bills and coins bear [present] his
image today.

Veracruz, municipality, capital city, and is port … It is the largest and most
important city in the state of Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llave. It holds the most
important maritime port in Mexico in the Gulf of Mexico.

During colonial times, Veracruz was of great importance since it was here from
where the ships departed to Spain loaded with gold, treasures and other
merchandise [products] in the denominated “West Indies Run.” This led
[guided] Veracruz to be attacked by pirates several times. In order to repel the
attacks, the city was surrounded by a wall and a series or forts and bulwark
[protection] were built. One of these forts was the San Juan de Ulúa Fortress,
built in 1590.
In 1607, the port received the status of city, ratified in 1640 by King Felipe II,
becoming then, one of the most ancient cities in Mexico. In that same year, the
Armada de Barlovento was created to defend the littoral from pirates. Veracruz
has been the seat [center, capital] of the Federation Executive Power twice – 1858
and 1914. In 1897, the Naval Academy was founded in this city by initiative of
Jose Maria de la Vega Gonzales, chief of the Naval Department.

The Port of Veracruz is considered four times heroic because it was the scenario
of four of the most important events in the safeguard of the national sovereignty
where the population fought heroically against foreign invaders. …, Veracruz

Isla de sacrificios (Island of Sacrifices) is located in the
city of Veracruz
-Isla de Sacrificios: the name evokes the religious ceremonies that developed
pre-Hispanic men in this portion of land, surrounded by clear waters and exotic
coralbanks.
Archeological excavations in the area have confirmed the performance of
religious rites, having found traces of burials and temple foundations Totonac,
but with the arrival of the Spanish, the island became in the repair of the colonial
ships.
Later, during the so-called Pastry War in 1838 (the first war with France) was
the starting point of the attacks Gauls. Later, the area would be occupied by U.S.
troops who invaded Mexico twice.
The Island of Sacrifice is the most important of which are located off Veracruz.
Today, in his "face of sand" has been "seeded [established]" a large modern
lighthouse that guides ships head to port.

In pre-Hispanic times was inhabited [colonized, occupied] by Totonac and
Olmec who was named Chalchihuitlapazco (Bright Jade) discovered in 1518 by
Captain Juan de Grijalva, during his exploration in the Gulf of Mexico, was
given its current name by virtue of having been found in she sacrificed bodies
of Indians during a ceremony offering to their gods. Today the island,
temporarily closed to the public has a powerful lighthouse that guides ships
into the harbor through the canal. Besides being the largest island of which are
in front of Boca del Rio, the island is surrounded by one of the most beautiful
coral reefs in the world.

Writing abilities - essential abilities for school and career
Writing is a form of communication, but also a learning instrument. Writing
develops the capacity of concentration. Free writing develops creativity and
imagination, writing on a subject develops the capacity of orientation towards
a purpose, the analysis and the synthesis, as well as the capacity of reflection.
Knowing to efficiently communicate in written form is one of the most
important abilities necessary in different contexts (school, workplace, business,
and formal situations). Many times, we are in the situation of writing an e-mail,
a report, a CV, or a letter of intention.
Well-developed writing abilities represent a plus in life. People able to
communicate efficiently in writing are more appreciated at the work place. They
create a good impression and they become more valuable.

Excellent writing skills means:
1. Better chances to successfully send messages;
2. Efficient communication with the others;
3. Increased authority and better impression on the others;
4. Any intellectual activity demands written expression, reason why it is
clearly “a life qualification”.

Towards an argument
Opinion verbs: to think, to consider, to assume, etc.
Adverbs or adverbial clauses of manner, used as indices of evaluative
subjectivity: probably, possible, of course, undoubtedly, certainly etc.
Conjunctions, conjunctional phrases with argumentative role mainly
used for expressing causal relations, consecutive, final, conclusion: since,
because, that, so that, therefore etc.
Formulations such as: first of all, firstly, secondly, for example, then, in
conclusion, therefore, since then, on the one hand ... on the other hand, thus etc.
Terms or phrases expressing directly a value judgment: as some believe;
Use of terms or expressions expressing indirectly a value judgment: we
can say that...
Other connectors – it results that, to mention that, only, that, in fact, too,
though, but, otherwise, in other words, therefore, namely – make secondary
internal connections to an argument.

Seven Core Principles

1. Reason
To achieve our goals requires that we think clearly and make good choices. We
must size up [evaluate] situations, solve problems, make decisions, and provide
for contingencies. In other words, we must think logically and be focused on
reality. The design of our products and processes must be thought through in
great detail so that our customers can rely on [be certain of] them. To keep our
customers, our products must meet their specifications and perform better than
those of our competitors.
We must recognize the importance of individual employees who stand out

Our focus on reason does not mean that we should not be passionate about our
work. Emotion provides the motivation to accomplish many tasks. However, it

on a solid understanding of the facts and not on hollow [insignificant] wishes
and conflicting goals. The right emotions are those that arise from well thought-
out goals and values, and flow from the self-confidence that results from

Rudyard Kipling in his famous poem “If” captures well the balance between
reason and emotion.
“If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it

Achieving a sense of control over our lives and business increases our self-
esteem and results in positive, motivating emotions.
We should not accept that our ability to think is fixed [immobile] at birth by our
IQ. To the contrary, there is much evidence that we can improve our reasoning
ability by training and by taking the effort to think. There is also much truth in

2. Integrity
Integrity means acting in accordance with our beliefs and principles. It means
keeping our promises to others but it requires more; it mandates being true to
ourselves and to what we stand for [signify, represent], to our convictions and
to our values. Integrity means following through on our commitments to deliver
high quality products on time and it means meeting deadlines [time limit] and
budgets [financial plan] for projects. Practicing integrity requires confidence—
confidence in our ability to do the right thing and in our ability to perform.

3. Honesty
Clear thinking requires access to facts as they are, not as we wish or pretend
them to be. If we hide [put out of sight] from the facts, we will never make the
changes that continuous improvement necessitates. Honesty requires a focus on
reality and a passion for getting at the facts.
Sergeant Friday in the old Dragnet series is famous for saying, “Just give us the
facts ma’am, nothing but the facts.”
Honesty means not faking [falsifying] reality. Honesty above all requires
courage because facing the facts is not always pleasant [enjoyable] and can meet
with the disapproval of those who hear them. People will not deal with [take
care of] us if they cannot trust us, and they won't trust us if they cannot believe
what we say.
Both business and personal success are based on being able to tell the truth—
say what you mean [signify, propose] and mean what you say. Facts must be
understood in a context and as we are not omniscient [well-informed] we can
always make honest mistakes. When we do, we must correct the errors.
Nevertheless [However], we should always courageously face the world as it is.
Honesty must be one of the pillars of our success at CBN [Canadian Bank Note],
so that those with whom we deal [do business], both inside and outside of CBN,
know that we speak the truth.

4. Independence
Each of us is responsible for our actions and our character, and thereby [in that
way] for our successes and our failures. At CBN, we must strive [make every
effort] to continuously improve, to do better than we have in the past, and to
surpass our competitors. Doing better requires creative ideas and these can only
come from individuals who think for themselves, and strive to always
understand the world for themselves. Working in groups and on teams is the
only way to get some work accomplished but even then ideas do not come from

relationships, be they with other employees or with individuals and
organizations dealing with CBN, such as customers and suppliers. Employees
who are treated fairly [objectively, impartially] are motivated to give their best
and to stay with CBN. Treating employees fairly requires that they be evaluated
individually and rewarded objectively based on their performance and
adherence to our values. We need to find ways to recognize and reward
appropriately those who contribute more. At CBN we evaluate based on
essentials such as competency, performance, and character, and not on non-
essentials such as race, sex, nationality, etc.

6. Productivity
Productivity measures the value that each of us contributes to the results of CBN
[Canadian Bank Note]. Each of us must contribute more in value than it costs to
have us on the payroll [employees, labor force]. Ultimately, our economic value
is determined by our customers. What our customers are willing to pay depends
on how the customer values our products and services compared to those
offered by our competitors.
Productivity requires that we continually improve our work and supply our
customers with outstanding [excellent] competitive value. Knowing how
productive we are requires measurement. Profitability [Effectiveness,
Productivity] and return on shareholders’ equity [fair play] are good measures
of productivity since they are powerful indicators of our competitiveness. We
need to be willing to be measured and compared, as keeping score is a necessary
part of doing better work.
Hard work and creativity are essential ingredients to being more productive.
We need to know our strengths [powers, potencies] and contribute according to
our abilities. Specialization improves productivity by expert employees
focusing on the work they do best. All of us need to recognize the need for a
variety of different skills to produce our products. This cannot happen without
extensive co-operation and teamwork.

7. Pride [Self-importance]
Pride is the emotional reward that we get for living by our principles. In this
sense, pride occurs as a result of practicing the other six principles. If we practice
integrity and stay true to our word, or if we improve the production process,
we feel proud of ourselves and of CBN [Canadian Bank Note].
According to Aristotle, there is a complimentary view of pride in which pride
precedes all of the other principles. To be proud (not arrogant) means to value
yourself or CBN enough to want to make improvements in your character or in
CBN, i.e., to be morally ambitious. The improvements are accomplished by
practicing the other six principles.
Our pride in CBN makes us want CBN to act more fairly, to be more honest and
to have the best possible reputation with our customers. Each of us must
perform our work in a manner so as to be able to be justly [reasonably, correctly]
proud of what we have accomplished. CBN must be the kind of organization
with which each employee and customer can be pleased to be associated.

considered one of the most important American building designers of the
twentieth century.

STEVE EMBER: Louis Kahn helped define modern architecture. Architecture is
the art and science of designing and building structures such as houses,
museums, and office buildings. Kahn’s architecture has several defining
qualities.

For example, Kahn was very interested in the look and feel of the materials he
used. He used brick and concrete in new and special ways. Kahn also paid
careful attention to the use of sunlight. He liked natural light to enter his
buildings through interesting kinds of windows and openings. Kahn’s work can
also be identified by his creative use of geometric shapes. Many of his buildings
use squares, circles and three sided shapes called triangles.
BARBARA KLEIN: Louis Kahn was born in Estonia in nineteen-oh-one. When
he was five years old his family moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Even as
a child, Louis Kahn showed excellence as an artist. When he was in school his
pictures won several competitions organized by the city. In high school, Kahn
studied architecture briefly. He later went to the University of Pennsylvania and
studied architecture full time. He graduated in nineteen twenty-four.

Faith is a grace
When St. Peter confessed that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, Jesus

The freedom of faith
To be human, "man's response to God by faith must be free, and... therefore

absolutely, the Responses are written by hand, and the
Works are Presented by Groups with a Maximum of 5 persons.
«I formulated a project for the CBTIS (Technological Industrial and of Services
Center of Bachelor Degree) 107 of Tuxtepec, Oaxaca, México consisting in giving to the
Library of this Institution with five volumes of English language, of my authorship. A
book for each semester, from the first English book to fifth English book (according to
the plan of studies in this regard of the CBTIS). At no cost to the Institution, because this
is a donation (in the staff, I solve my expenses of the project with income of my
employment as a professor that I would be in this CBTIS).
One of the major advantages of this project is to solve the need of the student
of spending in books of English language because the books will be at your complete
disposal into the student community in the Library of the institution.
Afterward, in an immediate subsequent phase of this project is that among the
student community of this CBTIS and all the CBTIS of the United Mexican States will
have these 5 volumes of English language by means of a page of Google; read it, neither
cost nor restriction to obtain them.
Well, as a last note, I must say that these books will have the format of
'workbook'. This, as an intelligent work with foundations and then their respective
exercises to resolve, into a concurrent process».
