2. Media Institutions
Hollywood Film Studios
As an audience of many genre of films, we know that there are big, production and
distributing companies in the world of film and television. The image below shows a
few of these major film distributors in which use a very large quantity of money to
produce and distribute their media products. Synergy is particularly used and can help
a film studio to increase profits of the film by using subsidiaries in order to
promote/advertise their product to a target audience.

Independent Film Studios
In comparison to the major Hollywood film studios, independent film studios produce and
distribute their own media products however, using a smaller budget in which they have to use
to advertise and promote their products. This can be difficult for the independent studio to make
large profits due to the low budget they are using and the lack of other business (subsidiaries) in
which Hollywood film studios have and the independent ones do not. Also, independent film
studios particularly target British Audiences as the American people are less likely to be able to
relate to these films such as; This is England and Four Weddings and a Funeral, in which were
British Independent Film produced and distributed to a British audience.

4. Who would distribute my
media product?
I have chosen the British independent film producer/distributor Film 4. The reasons for
this is that I believe this company will provide me with the significant and viable
resources in order to promote and appeal my product. Although Hollywood film
studios have a larger rate for successful films, I believe that due to the low budget that
I used, an independent film distributing company such as Film 4 would provide me
with the higher profits as producing and distributing media products is much cheaper
through an independent film studio, although the chance of the product being
successful is decreased.
Film 4
Film 4 are a British production company – a subsidiary of Channel 4 Television. Film 4
produce and distribute their media products, through the use of Synergy – with their
own TV channel, website and music channels, the company is able to advertise
cheaply and effectively using pre-owned media platforms. Film 4 have distrubted
many films of all types of genres, with the most successful of these being; Four
weddings and a funeral, This is England, 127 hours, The Inbetweeners Movie and many
more.

5. Who would your audience be?
Target Audience Profile
The target audience that I have chosen for my media product is people aged 15 and over. Particularly, horror
films are targeted at this target audience range due to the features and conventions that have been included
within the film. Some people, especially young people may find some scenes disturbing and traumatic, with
the popular use of blood, gore and regularly weapons. The BBFC certificate for 15 rated films states that the
use of features such as;
• Sexual Nudity
• Use of foul language (e.g f***)
• Drug Taking
• Verbal References to Sex
… are allowed and can be used within a 15 rated film.
The film that I have created relates to this category, however, it may possibly be rated at a 12A too as no
blood, gore or weapons have been used within the production and the content of the film. The 15 rating
certificate however covers and protects me in order of specific features such as swearing and references to
sexual and foul language used within.

6. How did you attract/address
your audience?
To attract and address my audience, I created and asked my
audience to complete this survey. By doing so, it has allowed
me to chose and allocate a specific target audience with the
features in which I need to include in order to make my film
appeal and target this audience group. I also used
Youtube.com and Facebook to attract other audiences with
the use of viewing and gaining audience feedback on these
media platforms.
