CowLab® – your innovation measured
• CowLab® is a place to biohack cows and develop products,
devices or applications to monitor changes in behavior, health,
and productivity
– For example, animal activity, rumination, movements and
location in the barn, resting and standing times, heat,
feeding behavior and milking parameters can be measured
and monitored with validated equipment.
• Wireless rumination, activity, heat monitoring and portable
progesterone tester
• Extensive measurements of individual cow’s parameters
– Location, feeding, activity, health parameters, production
• Barn environment monitoring

• Large databanks for data mining

Respiratory Chambers – measure the methane
production and energy balance in dairy cows

• Respiratory calorimeters are used to study the
energy metabolism and methane production of the
cows
• The inside climate is carefully controlled to ensure
animal comfort
• Four days of measurement include
• Milk production
• Feed intake
• Faecal and urine excretion
• Oxygen consumption
• Carbon dioxide, methane, and hydrogen
production
• Knowing air flow and O2, CO2, CH4 and H2
concentrations in the air, we are able to calculate:
• O2 consumption
• CO2, CH4 and H2 productions
• Heat production

Efficient method to study the effects of changing climate on soil,
water and plants: SIMU
Backround for SIMU:
• In Finland on regions with
wintertime snow cover, most of the
annual P load in surface runoff
occurs in spring during snow melt
• The research is slow, only few
treatments at time can be
compared at field size surface
runoff collectors
• Weather conditions change every
year, which increases variation
• SIMU was developed at Luke Kuopio
• It is small scale, fast, efficient and economical in comparing
different treatments to each other
• It has fully adjustable environmental conditions: temperature,
radiation, precipitation, snow cover depth and also a
adjustable slope of the ground and diurnal rhythm in
temperature and radiation
• All the data is recorded in real time which provides an
opportunity to monitor the effects of environmental conditions
• Monoliths are also possible to use in SIMU
• Examples of possibilities: measuring the nutrient load from
the different soils, the effect of changing winter conditions on
plant species winter tolerance, prevalence of plant diseases,
winter tolerance of different materials.

Research Forests as an innovation platform
• Research forests are State-owned and have
been reserved for R&D work (31,000 ha)
• 2,000 long-term experiments have been
conducted, e.g. in following fields:
– cutting methods, silvicultural treatments
(e.g. regeneration, tending of young
stands), fertilization, forest tree breeding,
exotic tree species, forest pathogens,
carbon and nutrient flows, functioning of
forest ecosystems)
• Research forests are based on the agreement
between Luke and Metsähallitus which
administers the forests
