Dominican Starfish Foundation focuses on 5 different areas of help for the Dominican Republic. Shelter, Food and Clothing, Health and Wellness, Education and Employment.
2. Donations of clothing,
shoes, hygiene kits, school
supplies, sheets, toys,
household items and more
are finally arriving again
with travelers from Canada.
3. We saw many advancements at our playground in Javillar.
5. Though she has her degree, jobs are very difficult to
secure, and most employers hire younger people. Luz
has created her own job by helping to tutor children.
She helps them with their homework and will also be
having someone that will be teaching English to her as
well as the children. She has 15 prospective students.
She has been teaching in her tiny living room.
She showed us a small area in the back that she would
like to enclose to have a teaching area.
Some of us were treated to dinner in the home of Ramon
and Luz. She was proud to show us her certificate of
graduation as a teacher.
We started a fundraiser for this
small addition so that she would be
able to help others and create
some employment.
This was
their original
home before
we helped
them.
6. We took clothing and gifts to the
impoverished community of
Baraguana.
Heidi Smith from Calgary who is a
frequent donor was able to meet
Marissa and her 4 children that she
has been helping to provide food and
education for.
7. Chad and Tonya Greiner also took
clothing to some of the Haitian
communities as well as provided
food for every family in the
community of Baraguana.
8. We also delivered
food packs to the
whole community
of La Chocolatera.
There are 72 +
families living
there in the
framework of an
old chocolate
factory.
9. We visited Kate’s school twice
and received a warm
welcome. Each of the children
had made starfish for us. We
delivered many suitcases full
of school supplies!
10.
11. We delivered hundreds of pounds of household items to the 8
families who lost their homes in the October fire in Padre de Granero.
12. 150 baseball hats, lots of uniforms, baseballs,
bats and gloves were delivered to teams in
Puerto Plata. Thanks to Eric Allen for collecting
these donations and for Wade Payne and Mike
Christensen for hauling them on the plane to
the Dominican Republic. Thanks also to
Fernando and Jose for assisting with the
distribution. There were many, many happy
children!!!
13. We visited the Flamingo English
School and delivered gifts from the
children in the Warner, Alberta
School. The children were so
excited!!
Thanks to
our teacher,
Alise, our
sponsors of
this program
and the
Warner
School!!
14. We hosted a graduation
ceremony for the graduates of
the hair-dressing and nail
courses that were sponsored
and taught in the community of
Baraguana. It was amazing to
see them dressed up in their
very best when they live in such
squalor. It was a very special
day for them.
15. 15-year-old Phoenix Roach from
Raymond, Alberta put together 80
hygiene packs for her mom and
siblings to take to the Dominican
Republic. They were happily
received by the graduates of the
hair-dressing school and another
group in our center that taught a
course on violence prevention in
families.
16. We were able to deliver a wheelchair
to Pedio who has lost a leg and part of
another foot due to complications of
diabetes.
This little miss
thought that the
chair was for her and
was right indignant
when we gave it to
Pedio. So cute!!
We are so
grateful that
Pedio has a
monthly sponsor,
Noelle in Arizona
who helps with
food and
medicine each
month!!
17. Several of us met with Lorenzo Castillo who works with the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the area of self-
reliance and humanitarian work. He was so impressed with the
work we are doing as a foundation and wants to find ways to
help us in the future. He visited many of our projects.
We are looking for ways
to help those in the
community to be more
self-reliant.
18. We delivered toys for 4 different
communities for Christmas. There will
be some happy children!! In the
meantime, Louise’s granddaughter Rori
loved playing with them and sorting
them for the different schools and
groups!
20. As a surprise, the home-building committee and other friends of Fernando raised money for
him to have a new home. He was very shocked and happy and extremely grateful. He
spends his life helping others get homes! It will be wonderful for him to get one also!!
21. Thanks so much to
our new friend and
supporter, Mike
Christensen for
announcing to one of
our amazing workers,
Jefrey that he would
raise the money for
him to have a new
home!!

Utah will be buying land and a home for this them!! What an
incredible gift and blessing!!
23. The large, remarkable duplex

families just before we
returned home from our

put in extra hours to have it
