Dominican Starfish Foundation July Summary
1.
2. We started raising funds for Elizabeth and Miguel to
have a new home. They have 8 children. The whole
family sleeps in one bedroom. Neither parent can
find employment and they are behind on their rent.
Father: Miguel Alcala 42
Mother: Elizabeth Tejada 31
Anabelis 16
Arianny 15
Mijael 14
Jesus Adrian 12
Grimeldy 10
Ana Loraini 1
3. We started a fundraiser for Nancy and
Roberto and their family. They have 4
children. Their home is being eaten
by termites. Besides their great need,
they were chosen because of the help
they give in the community.
4. A very kind couple
from Utah donated
funds for Heraldita and
her grandchildren to
have a home. The
challenge was that she
didn’t have property. It
is very difficult to find
available property and
when we do it is
usually very expensive!
We found a home to
purchase for Heraldita.
A little paint and it
will be perfect!!
Heraldita has a sewing business.
This home is perfect for her as it
has an area where she can set up
to do the sewing!
5. The Cruz family was presented with their new home. The Mayor of Imbert as well as two local
foundations presented plaques and expressed appreciation for the work of our foundation!
6. Louise, Fernando, Alise and other
members of the foundation
visited the community of
Baraguana where the citizens
were gathered to express
appreciation for the help we gave
during the pandemic.
Because the community is Haitian,
they received no help from the
government. They said that
Dominican Starfish Foundation
was the only one who helped
them during the crisis.
There were many people who
personally offered thanks for our
help. Thanks to so many donors
or this would have not been
possible. They were among the
first to receive help in March 2020
and several times following. Help
continues for this community.
7. We purchased the ceramic for the second story of our
center. Work continues on the project!
9. One night while Louise and Amarilis were
walking home after delivering food to a
family, Manuel approached us to see if we
could buy his home. He was selling it for
$18000. The home was definitely worth
the amount he was selling it for, but we
don’t have money sitting in the foundation.
Upon visiting with him, we learned that his
home was being repossessed for a debt of
$2100. He had borrowed money against
the home before Covid 19 and then when
the pandemic hit, it was impossible to
make payments.
We told him we would gift him that
amount so he wouldn’t lose his home. I
have never met anyone more grateful. He
also said that he would forgive the debts
that others owed to him.
10. We were joined by a team of 22 volunteers from Inspire Music from
Arizona. They donated paint and help us paint two homes!
13. The group from Inspire Music donated
and delivered 170 food packs to
hungry families in the community of
Maggiolo and beyond.
14. The group from Inspire Music spent
time helping, mingling and
performing in the community!
15. The Inspire Music group helped clean the playground and pour the cement for the
swings and teeter totters. They also left donations to add a gazebo to our park.
16. To many young men in the
Dominican Republic, baseball is
their life and their dream to
leave their poverty behind in
the future! The Dominican
Republic has more players in
the major leagues than any
other country.
Many times, when we have
visited, we have brought
donations of uniforms and
baseball equipment for the
children's leagues here.
Amarilis received a message
from Jose Tatis who is the
director of one of the Little
League baseball teams here.
We have supplied donations of
uniforms and baseball
equipment to his teams many
times in the past.
One of the young people
who grew up playing in his
league, Erik Gonzalez who
plays for the Pittsburg
Pirates flew his former
Little League coach, Jose to
the USA to watch one of his
games. Jose sent pictures
and asked for our
continued help for his
teams.
17. Fernando and his team finished the home
behind the Agramonte home. It’s just a little
350 sq ft. home. But it’s all the space we had
and so much better than what they’ve had.
18. We started the home for Paola and her family
This is the family we raised the money for, for
Mother’s Day. This family has 3 children, 2
who have special needs. The home was only
the height of Fernando’s head. Most of the
funds for this were raised in one week.
Great progress has been made so far!!
19. We started the home for the Azevedo Family
We started the raising funds for this family right after Christmas. They
have been on our list for a long time. The father and children both have
brittle bone disease. Their bones just break automatically. They were
renting a home but had saved and purchased a piece of land. Good
progress has been made during July.
20. We started the home for Yubelkes and her family
Yubelkis and her husband have 6 children. They have no steady employment and are in a
very difficult situation. They live in a rental home. Amarilis was able to find a small piece of
property next to their home that we purchased for them. The home was started last week.
21. With funds donation through the foundation there is a
crew building a home in Consuelo near the capital.
Donations were made to build a second story on a home to help a family with
residual income from future rent. They already have long-time renters waiting for
the construction to be completed.
22. Taylor Webster turned 13 in July. She lives in Las Vegas.
For the third time, this generous young lady has made
her birthday party into a fundraiser for Dominican
Starfish Foundation! She is amazing and we would like
to thank her so much. (And thanks to her wonderful,
supportive parents!)
This year Taylor raised money so that Roma and her
family could have a new roof on their home in the
Dominican Republic.
23.
24. With funds donated
through the
foundation, a small
home was rebuilt
for Joel in the
community of
Baraguana.
25. We have organized our Home Building Club and people can now join up on our website!!
