2. INTRODUCTION
Pipeline transport is the transportation of goods or material through a pipe.
These Pipelines exist for the transport of crude and refined petroleum, fuels -such
as oil, natural gas and biofuels, and other fluids including sewage, slurry, water,
and beer
Pipelines conveying flammable or explosive material, such as natural gas or oil,
pose special safety concerns and there have been various accidents.
There is a need to use field devices in data gathering to ensure proper regulation of
the pipeline transport.
3. PROBLEM STATEMENT
The process of monitoring fluid parameters like level, pressure temperature etc. of a plant
in petroleum industry as observed during our Industrial training period is rigorous.
In many oil servicing/plant maintenance company, personnel are employed to measure and
monitor fluid parameters; this entails taking periodic readings, which might be challenging
and rigorous, at such the sole motivation of this work is to reduce the stress of manual
monitoring of fluid parameters.
This project tends to use an embedded system to gather data and send the data to the
mobile phone. This measure can easily inform, the pipeline operator of the measurement
values of the fluid parameters and enable him to monitor the process. It is also designed in
an easy way such that the level of the reservoir will be displayed in the liquid crystal.
4. AIM & OBJECTIVES
The aim of this project is to design and construct an SMS based pipeline fluid
parameters monitoring system.
In order to realize the project’s aim, the following objectives will be pursued:
• To design a system that can measure pipeline fluid parameters.
• To integrate liquid crystal display for displaying captured fluid parameters.
• To develop system algorithm, then program in C language
• To simulate the system design using PROTEUS
5. SCOPE OF WORK
The project is limited to designing a system that can send data (SMS) wireless to
the operator of the pipeline servicing company, then notify the operator the volume
of the liquid in the reservoir, temperature and flow rate measurement in a pipeline,
the system will be simulated using PROTEUS.
6. LITERATURE REVIEW
• Pipeline Monitoring Using Vibroacoustic Sensing: Ravi, S.,KarthikRajS.,Sabareesan S.,&
Kishore R. in 2016 developed Pipeline monitoring using Vibroacoustic sensing, in their work, they
discovered that Vibroacoustic Sensing is an emerging technique for detection of leaks and foreign
particles in fluid transportation pipelines. This sensing is based on the remote identification of fluid
transients and pipe shell vibrations produced by interaction with pipe or flow. An acoustic sensor uses
mechanical waves as sensing mechanism. As the waves propagates through or on the surface of
material, any changes to characteristics of the propagation path affect the velocity and amplitude of the
wave.
• Smart Pipes: Smart Wireless Sensor Networks for Leak Detection in Water Pipelines: Ali, M. S.,
Metje, N., Chapman D. N.,& Anthony C. J. in 2014 developed smart wireless sensor networks for leak
detection in water pipelines, in their work they discovered that Asset monitoring, specifically
infrastructure monitoring such as water distribution pipelines, is becoming increasingly critical for
utility owners who face new challenges due to an aging network. This paper presents the design,
development and testing of a smart wireless sensor network for leak detection in water pipelines, based
on the measurement of relative indirect pressure changes in plastic pipes.
7. LITERATURE REVIEW CONTD.
• Pipeline Infrastructure Vandalism Monitoring using Wireless Sensor Networks Technique:
Yunana et al. (2017) developed pipeline Infrastructure Vandalism Monitoring Using Wireless
Sensor Networks Technique, in his work their discovered that Wireless Sensor Networks are
crucial substructure made up of microcontroller, sensing units and communication interfaces that
is designed to enable the users possess the capability to measure, collect and responds to
phenomenon within the surrounding been monitored.
• Autonomous Pipeline Monitoring and Maintenance System: A RFID-Based Approach: Jong-
Hong Kim et al. (2016) developed Autonomous pipeline monitoring and maintenance system: A
RFID-Based Approach, in their work they discovered that existing monitoring and maintenance
approaches are costly and inefficient because pipelines can be installed in large scale and in an
inaccessible and hazardous environment. To overcome these challenges, a novel Radio Frequency
Identification (RFID)-based Autonomous Maintenance system for Pipelines, called RAMP, which
combines robotic, sensing, and RFID technologies for efficient and accurate inspection, corrective
reparation, and precise geo-location information was proposed.

10. CONCLUSION
Design and implementation of pipeline based monitoring system control was of a
truth a fascinating task to undergo. The climax of the whole process was to see that
the hardware and software implementation are working as desired after several
processes of trial and adjustment.
This project has given us a great deal of insight into the field of communication
and engineering. The theories of communication learnt overtime during our
undergraduate period was applied.
This project will show how the ability to know the temperature, flow rate and
control volume of liquid in a tank is an immense value to the oil and gas industry.
