9. Dwight Christmas - The Office
Belsnickel and Krampus may seem like completely different things. However
this is not true. Belsnickel and Krampus come from the same tales and just
have different names based on the area of the world you are from. In this
episode of the office Dwight takes the unordinary route as dressing up as
Belsnickel for the Christmas party compared to what everyone is going off of
for American culture. Dwight explains what Belsnickel is to his culture and
shows how it is related to Christmas. Dwight goes on to show that Belsnickel
isn’t bad for what he does, it’s just what he is.

him unique to this story, however,
Krampus is still very closely rooted to his
true lore. At the end the culprit ended up
not being Krampus but instead some crazy
gods.

11. This story kept Krampus a pretty simple character and made sure he
stayed true to its lore. In this story Krampus comes and captures naughty
kids and tortures them. After he is done torturing them he takes them
away in his sack and in the kids place he leaves a lump of coal. This is a cool
contrast to the way Americans view Christmas where the kids who are
bed get coal for Christmas. Theres a lot of similarities that you can grab
from this show and they did a really good way of changing your perspective
on the culture of Christmas.

Summary
12. Who?
The roots Krampus came from actually have nothing to do with christmas. The name
Krampus is derived from the German word Krampen which means claw. According to legend
Krampus is the son of the Norse goddess Hel who is the youngest daughter of Loki. Hel is the
ruler of Helheim which is the Norse realm of the dead. (Tikkanen) Krampus is a half goat half
demon type of humanoid. Krampus today is supposed to be the counterpart of St. Nicholas.
St. Nicholas rewarded the good children while Krampus punished the bad ones. Krampus
shows up on December 5th which is known as Krampus Night, or in German Krampusnacht.
The next day kids would look out to see if the shoe they left out got presents, for being good,
or a rod, for being bad. All throughout Christmas season Krampus goes out and beats kids
with branches and can sometimes disappear to be tortured or even eaten. (Billock)
13. The Catholic Church saw Krampus as a pure
demon and representation of the devil,
because of this they did their best to surprise
him. The church did many things such as not
teaching the legend and forbidding and
celebration of it. Further more in WWII
fascists in Europe found Krampus to be
horrid as they considered him to be a
creation of the Social Democrats. Krampus
has started to appear more and more today
as more people look for an anti-christmasy
view. (Basu)

14. Krampus festivals are a pretty common thing in Europe with them only
getting more and more popular each year. However, Krampus related
things are still pretty rare in the United States. Only recently have we
started seeing U.S parties with one being in Portland. Some bars in the U.S
have little things to celebrate Krampus but nothing compared to how
Europe celebrates it. Only Recently have bigger events shown up in the
state such as Krampus runs in Los Angeles. (Crimmins)

15. Is Krampus Evil?
Many people try to say that Krampus is evil because he tortures kids. An
argument people bring up is that in the lore he does it because its his job to
do it. Krampus works closely with Santa and is seen as his buddy. Santa tells
Krampus who all the naught kids are and Krampus goes and gets them.
Today people are trying harder and harder to commercialize Krampus so you
will find more chocolate and stuffed animals related to him. People are
starting to complain about this saying that treating Krampus like this makes
him someone not to fear when in fact you should because he punishes the
bad people.
