2. What is it?
A development where electronic sensors are embedded to everyday
objects to transmit and receive information related to these objects.
The term “internet of things” was created because these normal
objects are now connected to the internet.
3. 50 Billion devices will be connected to the
internet by 2020
$1.9 Trillion of value will be added globally
4. “As the next evolution of computing, the
Internet of Things market will be bigger than
all previous computing markets.”
- Tyson Tuttle
5. Internet of Things (IoT) Will Have a Major
Impact On:
1. Health Care
2. Energy
3. Consumer Products
4. Insurance
5. Entertainment
6. Internet of Things (IoT)
could have a very positive
impact on us by giving us
increased knowledge of
ourselves and our physical
world.
But how will it impact the
industries listed previously?
7. Samsung’s smart devices
can monitor worrisome
changes in a person’s
health, then relay this
information to their
family and caregivers –
preventing future
problems
Health Care
8. Predictive production technologies can
increase quantity and quality
Improving pricing for customers by
tracking customer responses to price
changes
Energy
9. Monitoring the supply chain, tracking
how products are used or gaining more
insight into shopper preferences
Data can be used to personalize
consumer experiences and deliver
proactive services
Consumer Products
11. Products revolving around noticing fans behavior in real-time, along
with engaging them better.
At Taylor Swift concerts fans are given RFID-embedded bracelets that
change colour and pulse with the music
Entertainment
13. By connecting devices to the internet we are
giving hackers the opportunity to hack into our
devices and turn them against us.
Depending on what’s being hacked, this could
kill.
14. Most hacks occur when
programmers enter both
open and closed WiFi
networks, to access
devices with low security
(i.e. light bulbs)
15. People have expressed concern for even devices
like their stove being turned on without their
permission, and then burning down the house. Or
their insulin pumps having the amount of insulin
being controlled by an outsider.
16. Possibly the largest concern to date is the possibility of a hacked car. Many
automobiles already have full internet connectivity, opening them up to
potentially be controlled by a hacker. Instances of Jeeps being taken
control of and driven into ditches have created big scares, but no deaths.
17. Thankfully, no one has be fatally injured
yet, but that doesn’t mean it won’t ever
happen.
Hopefully we don’t have endure these
consequences to take IoT security
incredibly seriously.
18. Overall, IoT presents great benefits to the
advancement of our society. It should be
embraced and refined, not shunned and forgotten.
