What is Internet Of Things?
 Internet of things (IoT) is the latest trend in the IT
Industry. After the Cloud Computing boom, almost
all major Technology Houses are now investing in IoT.
With the increasing number of Smart Phones and easy
access to the Fast Internet across the globe, we are
moving towards a connected world where the sensors
will play a crucial role in our day to day life.
 Connecting things to the internet yields many amazing
benefits. We’ve all seen these benefits with our
smartphones, laptops, and tablets, but this is true for
everything else too.
 The Internet of Things is actually a pretty simple
concept, it means taking all the things in the world and
connecting them to the internet.
PAGE 3
What is Internet Of Things?
 When something is connected to the internet, that means that it can send information or receive information,
or both. This ability to send and/or receive information makes things smart, and smart is good.
 Common IOT Hardware Platform :--
*Arduino (Genuino) * Nodemcu * Raspberry Pi * Intel Edison * Intel Galileo * Flutter etc.
 The internet of Things, or “IoT” for short, is about extending the power of the internet beyond computers and
smartphones to a whole range of other things, processes, and environments. Those “connected” things are
used to gather information, send information back, or both.
 Why does IoT matter?: IoT provides businesses and people better insight into and control over the 99 percent
of objects and environments that remain beyond the reach of the internet. And by doing so, IoT allows
businesses and people to be more connected to the world around them and to do more meaningful, higher-
level work.
 In the Internet of Things, all the things that are being connected to the internet can be put into three
categories:
 Things that collect information and then send it.
 Things that receive information and then act on it.
 Things that do both.
PAGE 4
PAGE 5
1. Things that collect
information and then
send it.
2. Things that
receive information
and then act on it.
3.Things that do both.
This means sensors. Sensors
could be temperature sensors,
motion sensors, moisture
sensors, air quality sensors, light
sensors, and many more. These
sensors, along with a connection,
allow us to automatically collect
information from the
environment which, in turn,
allows us to make more
intelligent decisions. On the farm,
automatically getting information
about the soil moisture can tell
farmers exactly when their crops
need to be watered. Instead of
watering too much
We’re all very familiar with
machines getting information
and then acting. Your printer
receives a document and it
prints it. Your car receives a
signal from your car keys and
the doors open.
The real power of the Internet
of Things arises when things can
do both of the above. Things
that collect information and
send it, but also receive
information and act on it.
The sensors can
collect information about the
soil moisture to tell the farmer
how much to water the crops,
but don’t actually need the
farmer. Instead, the irrigation
system can automatically turn
on as needed, based on how
much moisture is in the soil. If
the irrigation system receives
information about the
weather from its internet
connection, it can also know
when it’s going to rain and
decide not to water the crops
today because they’ll be
watered by the rain anyways.
IOT History
The concept of the Internet of Things first became
popular in 1999, through the Auto-ID Centre at MIT
and related market-analysis publications. R
Radio-frequency identification (RFID) was seen as
prerequisite for the IoT at that point. If all objects and
people in daily life were equipped with identifiers,
computers could manage and inventory them. Besides
using RFID, the tagging of things may be achieved through
such technologies as near field communication, barcodes,
QR codes, Bluetooth, and digital watermarking.

Protocols Used In IOT
 Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT)
 Advanced Message Queuing Protocol (AMQP)
 Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP)
 Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP)
 Very Simple Control Protocol (VSCP):
 Data Distribution Service (DDS):
 RESTful HTTP (REST):
 OMA LightweightM2M (LWM2M):
PAGE 13
Technological Challenges Of IOT
 Scalability : Billions of internet-enabled devices get connected in a huge network, large volumes of data
are needed to be processed. The system that stores, analyses the data from these IoT devices needs to be
scalable.
 Connectivity Challenges: Connecting so many devices will be one of the biggest challenges of the future
of IoT, and it will defy the very structure of current communication models and the underlying technologies.
 Lack of government support: Government and Regulatory bodies like FDA should come up and bring up
regulations by setting up a standard committee for safety and security of devices and people.
 Safety Of Patients: Most Of IoT devices are left unattended, as they are connected with real-world
objects. If used on patients as wearable devices, any technical error in security can be life-threatening for
patient.
 Security And Personal Privacy : There has been no research in security vulnerabilities and its
improvements. It should ensure Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability of personal data of patient
 Design Based Challenge : With the development in technology design challenges are increasing at a faster
rate. There have been issues regarding design like limited computation power, limited energy and limited
memory which need to be sorted out.
PAGE 14
Criticisms and Controversies of IoT
 Privacy
 Security
 Autonomy and Control
 Social control
 Political manipulation
 Design
 Environmental impact

And by doing so, IoT allows businesses and people to be more connected to the world around them and to do more meaningful, higher- level work.  In the Internet of Things, all the things that are being connected to the internet can be put into three categories:  Things that collect information and then send it.  Things that receive information and then act on it.  Things that do both. Sensors could be temperature sensors, motion sensors, moisture sensors, air quality sensors, light sensors, and many more. These sensors, along with a connection, allow us to automatically collect information from the environment which, in turn, allows us to make more intelligent decisions. On the farm, automatically getting information about the soil moisture can tell farmers exactly when their crops need to be watered. Instead of watering too much We’re all very familiar with machines getting information and then acting. Your printer receives a document and it prints it. Your car receives a signal from your car keys and the doors open. The real power of the Internet of Things arises when things can do both of the above. Things that collect information and send it, but also receive information and act on it. The sensors can collect information about the soil moisture to tell the farmer how much to water the crops, but don’t actually need the farmer. Instead, the irrigation system can automatically turn on as needed, based on how much moisture is in the soil. If the irrigation system receives information about the weather from its internet connection, it can also know when it’s going to rain and decide not to water the crops today because they’ll be watered by the rain anyways.
  • 6. IOT History The concept of the Internet of Things first became popular in 1999, through the Auto-ID Centre at MIT and related market-analysis publications. R Radio-frequency identification (RFID) was seen as prerequisite for the IoT at that point. If all objects and people in daily life were equipped with identifiers, computers could manage and inventory them. Besides using RFID, the tagging of things may be achieved through such technologies as near field communication, barcodes, QR codes, Bluetooth, and digital watermarking. PAGE 6

  • 14. Technological Challenges Of IOT  Scalability : Billions of internet-enabled devices get connected in a huge network, large volumes of data are needed to be processed. The system that stores, analyses the data from these IoT devices needs to be scalable.  Connectivity Challenges: Connecting so many devices will be one of the biggest challenges of the future of IoT, and it will defy the very structure of current communication models and the underlying technologies.  Lack of government support: Government and Regulatory bodies like FDA should come up and bring up regulations by setting up a standard committee for safety and security of devices and people.  Safety Of Patients: Most Of IoT devices are left unattended, as they are connected with real-world objects. If used on patients as wearable devices, any technical error in security can be life-threatening for patient.  Security And Personal Privacy : There has been no research in security vulnerabilities and its improvements. It should ensure Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability of personal data of patient  Design Based Challenge : With the development in technology design challenges are increasing at a faster rate. There have been issues regarding design like limited computation power, limited energy and limited memory which need to be sorted out. PAGE 14
