2. Today we are developing our knowledge and understanding of Scottish
Soldiers training and uniform in WW1.
By the end of today’s lesson I should be able to:
1) Describe the training given to soldiers before the war.
2) Describe the uniform given to soldiers.
Today’s lesson involves:
1) Note taking
2) Labelling a figure
3. Training in World War One
• At the start of World War One Britain urgently needed new soldiers,
however these new soldiers also needed trained for the army.
• Before conscription was introduced in 1916, young men were
recruited at their local recruitment office.
• When they joined the army they needed different types of training,
training for a new army recruit often lasted around 3 months before
they were sent to fight.
• They were sent to training camps such as Stobs Military Camp in
Hawick, in the Scottish Borders.
4. Training in World War One
• These training camps were aimed to improving men’s fitness and
ensured that they were disciplined enough to follow orders.
• Reveille (Bugle) at 5:30am helped achieve this discipline.
• Training also prepared soldiers for the battlefield as they learned
basic skills such as marching, shooting, digging trenches and night
manoeuvres.
• Many soldiers were also expected to learn a specific skill too. This
included military actions such as the work involved in operating a
machine gun or how to be a sniper.
• Other soldiers learned how to be cooks.
5. Discipline in Training
• Discipline was harsh in training in order to prepare soldiers for the
front line.
• Men who did not follow orders could have privileges withdraw, given
extra duties or even be locked up.
6. Task 1
Take a new page in your jotter and stick your cut-out of a man into your
jotter.
Put the title ‘Uniform of a WW1 soldier’.
We are going to go through some information about a WW1 soldier,
when we do so you must label the soldier.
When finished you can colour your soldier in.
7. Uniform of a Soldier
A Soldier’s uniform involved many different parts:
1) Walking boots which often had to be softened with urine.
2) Helmet
3) Ground sheet cape
4) Knee length bandages
5) Khaki (Camouflage) trousers and jacket.
6) Soldiers also received a gas mask to protect them from
attack.
7) Soldiers had a variety of weapons include a rifle, bullets
& grenades.
8) Many Scottish soldiers often wore a kilt instead of
trousers. Many thought this was more comfortable but
they often became infested with lice.
9) Other equipment given to a soldier include a knife, fork,
shaving kit and shovel.
