When analysing and researching Atiba Jefferson’s photography who is a well-known
skateboard/ extreme sports photographer I came across a variety of different
examples of photo’s which can be taken in the skateboard industry. My personal
favourite will have to be the black and white shot of Andrew Reynolds just above, for
many reasons why I think this is a good photo e.g. it has been taken mid trick showing
the expressions of all the people surrounding and also singling out the main object
and purpose of the whole photo which being Andrew Reynolds throwing a very
unusual trick down many stairs based randomly in the street. As the photo has been
taken or edited in black and white it is very difficult to know what time of year it could
be as there is no colour used although I did realise that there are leaves on the trees
and the clothing the audience are wearing I will judge that it was took during spring-summer
times. I researched the location where this photo was taken I read up that it
was taken somewhere in Portugal during a skate tour explaining the large amount of
people fascinated by the tricks.
Composition
Viewing the angle the photo was taken from it seemed that Atiba (the
photographer) took this photo from eye level as the people surrounding are all the
same height as the photo. I think that he chose to take the photo from this angle
because it’s showing you what it looks like from the person’s point of view at this
specific moment giving you the feel of atmosphere being at that place at that time. I
think that Atiba had zoomed in just slightly to specify that the photo was taken to
focus on the person doing the trick and possibly the trick itself as Atiba uses a lot of his
photography for magazines which look more into skateboarding. Also they might
have been buildings or other people in the background which could have ruined the
shot so he could have zoomed in or even cropped the photo to extinguish the
objects or people from the shot. Also he has un-focused the people surrounding the
skateboarder this just shows that the photo is focused on the skateboarder only.
Techniques used
Think shutter speeds, rule of thirds & depth of field
Looking more at the technical parts of the photography used he has verified the
shutter speeds of a majority of the photographs I have focused on, for the main
photo I have been analysing there doesn’t seem to be much light coming through
5. but it’s hard to tell due to the fact that it is in black and white
