3. Outcomes
At the end of the presentation you should be able to:
• Understand the concept feudalism.
• Know how and why feudalism was established.
• Be able to determine the interdependence of the feudal
classes on each other.
• Be able to identify the most disadvantaged class in the
system and injustices experienced.
4. Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries
• Europe consisted of a number of small states that were often at war with
each other.
• The European society was feudal characterized by autocratic rulers: Kings
and queens.
5. Definitions
• Feudal: a society in which people are divided into groups
and landowning warrior nobles control the way the state is
run.
• Autocratic: relates to a ruler who has absolute power.
• Autocracy: a type of government where the king makes all
the laws and does not share power.
• Middle Ages: the period from 500 from 1500 AD.
6. Emergence of the feudal system
• The feudal system came to existence during the middle Ages.
• It was a system of defence that revolved around ownership of the land.
• The kings were in need for protection and defend of their kingdoms
from their subjects in time of war.
7. Operation of the feudal system
Kings:
• Kings were autocratic rulers.
• Owned all the land.
• Kings were owed service by the other
classes.
• Gave nobles land in exchange for their
loyalty and military service.
• The portions of land were called “fiefs”
(Sperling, 2011).
8. Operation of the feudal system
Nobles:
• Friends and relative of the king given
land by him.
• Swear an oath of loyalty to the king for
the land given.
• Live in great manor houses or castles
for protection.
9. Operation of the feudal society
Knights:
• Granted land by the nobles.
• In return, provide military service for the
nobles.
• Essential duty to defend the church.
10. Operation of the feudal society
Peasants:
• Worked for the nobles and knights.
• Uncompensated services provided:
farmed the land, cut wood, repair
buildings and haul water.
• The only class to pay tax to the king and
nobles for their land they resided on.
• Gave nobles a share of their harvest as
tax.
