2. MIMAROPA
The Treasure Trove of Southern Luzon
MIMAROPA lies in the southern part of Luzon. It is
archipelagic, comprising the large group of island
provinces of Mindoro (divided into Occidental
Mindoro and Oriental Mindoro), Marinduque,
Romblon, and Palawan. The name is an acronym that
stands for its five constituent provinces.
4. Mindoro is home to seven distinct
native groups known as Mangyans. The
Hanunuo-Mangyan group in the south
is noted for its "true/real/genuine"
Mangyan art, whereas the Iraya-
Mangyan group specializes in elaborate
baskets created from dried nito grass
and forest vines. Ambahan, urukay, and
intricately patterned baskets are among
the art forms that showcase Mindoro's
rich cultural past.
5. Rafael Arenillo Cusi, also known by his
nickname Popoy Cusi, is a Filipino artist
who specializes in watercolour. He is
also dubbed as the “Master of
Watercolour in the Philippines” and is
acclaimed as one of the top artist of the
Philippines in his times including other
artists who also specializes in
watercolor.

8. Every Holy Week, the Moriones Festival in
Marinduque is a Lenten tradition. It
depicts Roman troops wearing masks
made of wood or papier-mâché and
embellished with shells, animal hairs, and
tassels. Marinduqueos teach weaving
with buli and raffia leaves.
9. Raymond Kawataki Go is a Filipino Asian Modern &
Contemporary artist who was born in 1978. His
works has been offered at auction multiple times,
with realized prices ranging from 401 USD to 1,376
USD, depending on the size and medium of the
artwork. Since 2017 the record price for this artist
at auction is 1,376 USD for I am a Billionaire, sold
at León Gallery, Makati in 2020.

12. Romblon is well-known for its high-
quality marble and beautifully
woven mats and bags made from
Romblon plants.
13. Nestor Vicente Madali Gonzalez, often known
simply as N. V. M., was an internationally famed
Filipino teacher and writer of novels, short stories,
and essays. During his long and distinguished
career, he received many awards. In 1997, near the
end of his life, he was proclaimed a National Artist
of the Philippines.

16. Palawan, the Philippines' last
frontier, is a culturally and naturally
varied territory with its own writing
system similar to the Hanunuo and
Buhid Mangyans.
17. Tingkop is a cone-shaped colander
harvest basket made of blackened
and natural bamboo. It displays their
craftsmanship in weaving. The
extremely subtle changing of the
under-over pattern of the bamboo
strips makes the design stand out.

18. Nil Sencillo is a realist painter born in Puerto and
trained at FEU. He has exhibited in one-person
exhibitions since the '70s. He works in oil and
paints in a traditional style depicting Palawan life
and people.
