INTRODUCTION
How children learn a second language?
 In the same way they acquire their mother tongue.
The more English they hear, the more they learn.
 Our natural linguistic processes help us to adapt and
acquire language as we mature.

  • 3. INTRODUCTION How children learn a second language?  In the same way they acquire their mother tongue. The more English they hear, the more they learn.  Our natural linguistic processes help us to adapt and acquire language as we mature.
  • 4. A new language in school is Teaching a new language is challenging for all teachers because Different from the other subjects Not just about learning facts and concepts Being able to understand and use the language to do things You have to maintain your own proficiency in English You have the responsability of using English with your children
  • 5. When you use English you are Showing that this new language is another form of expression Showing you can use English to comunicate. English is fun Open door to other cultures and customs
  • 6. 1.HOW CAN WE HELP CHILDREN TO LEARN AND IMPROVE? We can help them with our tone of voice and eye contact We can help them by using gestures, facial expressions, pictures and real things We can help them by using familiar contexts, rephrasing what you say in as many ways as you can, occasional use of their mother tongue
  • 7. 1.1. RECASTING Profe, ¿puedo ir al baño? Yes! You can go to the bathroom! “To repeat what children say in their mother tongue in English”
  • 8. 1.2. REPHRASING “Changing what the child said in English into better English without any negative coment” Oh! So you are going to the park today, right? Teacher, I go park today
  • 9. 1.3. CORRECTING YOUR PUPILS Good corrections techniques should mean that:  It is clear that you are not changing what a child is trying to say  You are trying to help them to make their meaning clearer
  • 10. 2. USING YOUR COURSEBOOK AS A RESOURCE The coursebook support the teachers in their lessons and help them in their planning. The coursebook: Offer you a prepared set of classroom activities and language, saving time. Offer children a learning aid, set general standars. Is a colourful and attractive tool for children
  • 11. 1.3. PLANNING YOUR LESSONS BEFORE THE COURSE GENERAL PREPARATION SPECIFIC LANGUAGE PLANNING FOR A LESSON

BEFORE THE COURSE  Create a relaxed atmosphere in the class  Make displays that can be used and re- used for several languages practices  Plan to conect some of the topics you use throughout the year GENERAL LESSON PREPARATION  Remember that you teach English by using English in your lessons  Tell children what are you going to do and help them see why  Try to give individual attention to different children SPECIFIC LANGUAGE PLANNING FOR A LESSON Prepare what you are going to say when you:  Greet your pupils  Talk to your pupils about different topics and routines  Set up an activity, organize your pupils, say what are you going to do and give instructions
