3. 1.0 INTRODUCTION
• Global competition and new challenges facing business and industry are
creating substantial pressures on all organizations. In the present information
and knowledge era, knowledge has become a key resource that enhances
organizational performance.
4. 1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY
• The role of especially Higher Education is a major driver of economic
development in Sri Lanka. Higher Education in the country is now in a
unique position, as Sri Lanka's future in the global knowledge economy
depends critically on the country's human capital. The challenges face by
some of our universities are enormous and UGC with support of higher
education ministry need to do a lot in this respect.
5. 1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT
• Sri Lanka has placed paramount importance on science and technology
to achieve its vision 2020 which is to establish a scientific and progressive
society; a society that is innovative and forward looking. However, there
are number of problems that may threaten the further growth of this
industry in this country.
• One of the problems face by private higher education institutions is due
to wide variation in quality and consistency of teaching and learning
standards between public and private higher education institutions
6. 1.3 JUSTIFICATION
• Importance of this study represents in the important of the private
education institutes that represent the knowledge production centers
and preparing the future’s leaders and one of the most important index
for the countries progress, also its importance represents in revealing
important sides of the role of KM processes in improving the
organization performance. So developing the intellectual capital, and
building knowledge structure is important.
7. 1.4 DELIMITATION
• This study has the scope of investigating the effect of the KM practice. In
order to conduct this research, Private Professional Educational
Institutions have selected. It was hoped that this study would provide
valuable insights to the management at private higher education
institutes on the effects of knowledge management practice on
organizational performance and challenges in knowledge management.
8. 2.0 LITERATURE REVIEW
• KM is regarded as collection, distribution, and efficient use of knowledge resources. It
is a process of knowledge creation, validation, presentation, distribution, and
evaluation. KM is a set of procedures, infrastructures and technical and managerial
tools, designed towards creating, sharing, leveraging information and knowledge
within and across organizations.
• Gold et al. (2001) identified key aspects of KM process that is: (i) knowledge
capturing, transfer, and use; acquire, collaborate, integrate, experiment (ii) create,
transfer assemble, integrate, and exploit; (iii) create, transfer and use.Liou (1990) as
cited in Wamundila (2008) defines knowledge acquisition as the process of extracting,
structuring and organizing knowledge from human experts so that it can be captured
and transferred into machine readable form.
9. 2.1 RESEARCH GAPS
• Sri Lanka, learning administration is to some degree new discernible
certainty and is in the first place periods of its execution. Officially
existing writing demonstrates that there is not much work done in Sri
Lanka in connection of KMPs and organizational. So there is a need to
study effect of learning administration hones (information obtaining,
information transformation, information application and learning
insurance) on association execution. This study will fill this gap.

• This study attempts to answer the following research questions

organizational performance at PHEIs?
2. What are the effects of knowledge sharing practices on organizational
performance at PHEIs?
3. What are the effects of KM policies and strategies on organizational
performance at PHEIs
11. 2.3 RESEARCH OBJECTIVE
• The main aim of the study was to investigate the effects of KMPs on
organizational performance at PHEIs.
• The specific objectives of the studies were
1. To establish the effect of knowledge capture and acquisition practices
on organizational performance at PHEIs.
2. To determine the effect of knowledge sharing practices on
organizational performance at PHEIs.
3. To determine the effect of KM policies and strategies on organizational
performance at PHEIs.
12. 3.0 RESEARCH METHODLOGY
• Research Methodology is the procedure through which the researchers
collect data, tabulate and then analyze it by using different statistical
techniques.
13. 3.1 POPULATION AND SAMPLING
• Study population consisted of the Sri Lankan PHEIs and IT companies,
under study is (5) private institutes.
• A relevant stratified random sample has been drowning from the private
institutes that form the study population, study sample number reached
(150).
16. 4.0 CONCLUSION
• The study was to investigate the effects of KMPs on organizational
performance at private higher education. The effects that were
established that there was an overall positive effect of KMPs on
organizational performance at PHEIs over the research problem.
