2. Codes and conventions of Film
Reviews:
Bold Title – Grabs the audiences attention; typically the name of the film
Main Image- Usually a still shot or image from the film; this helps identify the
protagonist of the film as well as set the tone of the film.
Text Body- Usually has a synopsis, includes reviews from film critics, Quotes
from the film, In depth analysis of the film. It also includes synopsis, cast and
crew information, as well as reviews by critics.
Rating System- (6/10) or star rating out of 5; Easy for the audience to
understand; higher ratings will attract a wider audience
Important information- Director, cast, producer, age certificate.

4. Main Image- The main image used in a film review
is typically still shot of a scene in the film, this sets up
the mood and genre of the film attracting the target
audience.
This main image that has been used is taken from a
scene in the film. This creates convergence between
the two products allowing the audience to make a
link between the review and the film. As a result the
audience are able to make an overall opinion as to
whether they want to watch the film.
As the photo is taken from the film the audience get
an idea about what the film will be like. The Bold red
colour connotes a sense of danger, this is a main
convention of an action film which makes the
suggestion that the protagonist is a target of danger.
Busy background also connotes that the film will be
action based targeting an audience (action film fans),
foreground is the main focus; attracts the target
audience- action film fans, superhero fans.
5. Headline/Sub-headline –
These are used to make it clear to the audience what is being reviewed. The sub
headline “The amazing Spidey swings to new heights in Sam Raimi’s jaw-crashing
sequel” is the initial opinion of the film. From reading this the audience can make a
decision as to whether they like the look of the film and want to carry on reading the
review to make an overall opinion of the film or whether they do not like the look of
the film.
6. Main Text- Contains the film
review. This expresses to the
reader the opinion of the film by
breaking it down into various
sections.
The main text generally includes a
synopsis as well as various
opinions from critics, describing
the quality of the film from the
viewpoints of the; actors,
directors, editing, music and ends
with an overall opinion helping
the audience to decide whether
they are interested in the film or
not.
7. Rating System- Gives the audience an overall opinion. The 5 star rating system is easy
to interpret and therefore can attract an wider audience due to the good rating that
has been given.
There is an alternate rating system; predicted interest curve. This demonstrates the
interest shown in the film, it is high up showing a high recommendation, it also
includes similar films at the side showing a wider potential audience; people who
liked the other films are thought to like this film.
8. Main Image- The main image focuses on the main
characters, it is a still shot taken from the film to give the
audience an idea about the film genre. From this image it
is connoted that the film genre is romance.
Comment on the previous film;
reinforces the knowledge that this film
is aimed at a pre-existing audience
Star Rating- gives the viewer an
idea/overall opinion on the film.
This can help attract more people
to view the film.
Extra information- Gives
general information about
the film such as release date,
running time, actors; tells the
audience important things
they need to know about the
film.
Title- is the name of the
film in order to make it
clear to the audience
what is being reviewed.
Text Body- reviews the film intending
to give an overall opinion to the
audience helping them decide
whether or not they like the look of
the film and want to see it.
