 A houseboat is a boat that
has been designed or
modified to be used primarily
as a home. Some houseboats
are not motorized, because
they are usually moored, kept
stationary at a fixed point and
often tethered to land to
provide utilities

4. Punnamada Lake
 Punnamada Lake (also called Punnamada
Kayal) is a part of the Vembanad Lake, which
is the biggest lake in Kerala. Vembanad Lake
spans to a number of districts in Kerala.
Hence, it is called by different names at
different parts of Kerala.

5.  Kettuvallamis a house boat
widely used in the Indian state of Kerala.
These have thatched roof covers over
wooden hulls. The traditional kettuvallam is
mainly used for promoting Kerala tourism.
HISTORY
The history of such boats in Kerala
goes back to Uru, a large Dhow-
type wooden ship made by the
carpenters in Beypore, south of
Kozhikode port. The teak was
taken from Nilambur teak forests in
earlier times, but now imported
Malaysian teak is used.

6. MATERIALS AND
CONSTRUCTION
 HOUSE BOAT is about 100 feet in length and has a
width of around 13 feet in the middle. The materials that go
into the making are local and ecofriendly; bamboo poles,
coconut fibre, ropes, bamboo mats, carpets etc.

7.  The roof has been made of two
layers of bamboo reeds, with a
polythene layer in the middle. The
area below this and the ceiling has
been filled with thermocol to give
maximum cooling effect.
 Raised walls are plywood.
Plywood used is marine
plywood. The wood undergoes
certain process to give a
complete water proof wall
finish.

8.  This boat house have two bed rooms
with single bed and one with double
bed.
 Bedrooms has attached bathroom
with dressing room.
 A big window is
provided in bedrooms.
 It has dining hall in front side of boathouse
with big windows.
