SECONDARY THREE HUMAN GEOGRAPHY
CHAPTER ONE: GLOBAL TOURISM
Geographer’s name: ________________________________ ( ) Class: 3 ___________________ Date: _________________
GATEWAY 1: WHY DOES THE NATURE OF TOURISM DIFFER FROM PLACE TO PLACE?
 Earth is home to physical and human environments which attract tourists. And because places are different throughout the world (due to their unique
culture, history, natural landforms, climate etc), the nature of tourism and types of tourism activities vary from place to place.
Factors affecting the nature of tourism
 Tourism can be affected by __________________ (eg. type of landscapes, climate and weather) and
_________________ factors (cost of travelling, budget, effectiveness of marketing and the quality of infrastructure).
Government Media International organisations Travel writers
 Government are often directly involved
in _____________, _____________ and
__________________ projects linked to
tourism (eg. airports, roads and ports).
 Governments may also set up agencies
(eg. Singapore Tourism Board) that
__________________ (eg. marketing
campaigns & promotional events) to
help promote tourism in their country.
 Positive media reports
(eg. friendliness of the
local population,
interesting culture,
good eating and
shopping opportunities,
and attractive scenery)
about a country/area
can encourage tourists
to visit.
 The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and
Development (OECD) meets regularly to actively
promote the sustainable growth of tourism.
o OECD promotes tourism as tool for national growth
& job creation.
 The UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO)
promotes tourism as a way of spurring economic growth
and environmental sustainability.
o UNWTO promotes sustainable tourism development
as tool for poverty reduction and job creation.
 As travel writers
write about and
evaluate places
they have visited,
it may give their
readers
inspiration on
choosing their
travel
destinations.
Tourists are persons travelling to and staying in places
________________________________ for more than
__________ but not more than __________________
___________ for leisure, business and other purposes.
Who is a tourist?
§ Tourism refers to the activities of tourists.
§ Tourism can be categorized into either:
o ________________ – tourism outside of a tourist’s own country.
