Green Network has experienced several changes over the past year that have helped put the company back on track. A new management team was implemented and key positions were filled. Efforts were made to gain support from heads of state and settle debts with suppliers. As a result, subscriber bases have grown substantially in South Sudan, Ivory Coast, and Uganda. However, more work remains to be done to achieve the goal of 2 million subscribers by the end of the year. Additional articles provide updates on environmental initiatives in Uganda, a birth registration partnership between UTL and UNICEF, Uganda's independence celebrations in South Sudan, and other company news.

Green Network Newsletter Highlights Progress in 2012

Green Shoots
News from the world of Green Network
Welcome to the Green Network Newsletter!
Dear Colleagues,
It has beem one year now since my apointment as the Chairman of LAP
GreenN .
My dear colleagues, it is about time for me to take a minute and let you
know what has been happening over the past few months.
Green Network has experienced several monumental changes on
various levels and given our history, I am proud of all the achievements
that we have accomplished together to put the company back on track
and ensure its sustainability.
We started by restructuring the company and putting in place a new management team at Group level. .
Caba Pinter, Group CFA and Kevin McLoughlin, Group CTO both bring in years of experience in the
telecommunications industry. We have also hired high profile professionals to fill in top management
positions in the operations and we are still in the process of recruiting both Group and Operations’ key
functional positions. This new blood is vital to moving the business forward.
With the UN sanctions heavily affecting the company, we embarked on a race to win the support and
trust of Head of Governments: we attended the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa in January 2012,
met with the President of Uganda and the Minister of Information’s New Technologies and
Communications of Ivory Coast amongst other major public figures. We also started to settle our debt
with various suppliers and slowly but surely we are looking to honour all of them. This massive effort
contributed to gain back the trust of our suppliers and business partners and to resume our operations.
Today, two months before the end of the year and I’m glad to see that we have made tremendous
progress:
• In South Sudan, a slow but consistent growth of our subscriber base has led us to reach the
300,000 subscribers milestone.
• In Ivory Coast, the GreenN Holiday promotion has given a big push to our acquisitions,
increasing our subscriber base by about 178% in the past 3 months to reach 420,000 subscribers.
• In Uganda, similarly, the ‘Blue Warriors’ conquered the market acquiring new subscribers to
reach now a total of 850,000 customers.
These achievements demonstrate that the efforts that have been made are paying off and I would like
to thank each and every one of you for making it happen. However we still have a long way to go, full of
obstacles and challenges hence we need to remain focused to achieve our goal of reaching the 2 million
customer milestone by the end of 2012.
I have faith in you and I believe that thanks to your hard work and strong commitment, we will prevail
and succeed.
Wafik Shater,
CEO & Chairman of LAP GreenN
2. News from Uganda
Environmental stewardship
Uganda Telecom, a flagship brand under the LAP GreenN umbrella is coming to the forefront of
deploying environmentally friendly ways of running its GSM radio base stations.
The Project Directorate at UTL, an initiative sponsored by David Holliday (Managing Director), is a
comprehensive programme resulting in major reductions in emissions and operating costs for the
company.
It will trim carbon emissions by reducing the dependence on grid power as well as diesel and yet
significantly cutting down the operations expenditure (OPEX) for Uganda Telecom. Currently power
costs on base stations account for more than the half of the operational expenditures.
We are currently looking at 3 green options:
The first involves switching off of all air conditioning units around the current configuration of networks
BTS. Mr John Weir (Project Director) explained: “We have deployed this solution on some Alcatel sites
successfully and so far there is no interruption to service, but there has been a significant reduction in
fuelling consumption ”.
The benefit of this option is that it requires no investment. The down side for UTL is that it is currently
only feasible with the Alcatel built base stations, which can operate without the need for full time air
conditioning due to being able to run at a relatively high ambient temperature (45oC).
John explains that the two other options lay on the deployment of solar power as well as on deep cycle
batteries. Although this will initially require a significant investment for the ca. 480 UTL base stations,
in the long-term, these initiatives will offer the financial and environmental ROI that we seek.
John explains that his team will conclude the evaluations of the various options so that management at
UTL as well as at the level would have some international best practice benchmarks on which to make a
decision whether to outsource management of sites or to manage them internally.
3. News from Uganda
UTL and UNICEF solve birth registration nightmare
UTL jointly with UNICEF is proud to announce the creation of the Birth Registration Automation Project
named “MobileVRS” (Mobile Vital Record Systems). The project aims to boost birth and death
registration in Uganda. With the current paper-based system, only one in five children under the age of 5
years is registered due to lack of logistics.
The partnership involves a merging of UTL’s innovative software development, UNICEF’s strategic
programme management and the support of the Uganda registration services bureau. The system is
being used to gather birth and death registration data at community level and also from hospitals. The
information is then captured and transmitted by mobile phones – in real time – from the community, and
by a web-based application from the hospitals, right into a government server that is centrally located.
The yearly estimated 1.5 million births in Uganda should then be ensured to be documented in a timely
and accurate manner
Birth Registration, according to the United Nations Convention on the
Rights of the Child (CRC), is the starting point for the official recognition
and protection of every child’s fundamental right to identity and existence.
“Ugandan children whose births are unregistered may miss out on basic
services, such as access to education, health services and protection from
violence, exploitation and trafficking”, said UNICEF Uganda Country
Representative, Dr. Sharad Sapra. “Our common goal in this partnership is
to increase Birth Registration for children less than 5 years by four-fold,
from 21 percent today to 80% by 2014”.
SIM cards registration
The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has launched a public SIM card registration and
appealed to all Ugandans to register their SIM cards. UTL was well prepared, welcoming the clients in
their branded tents in order to gather all information necessary.
The accelerated registration plan had for objective for UTL to be the 1st Operator to announce that all
clients are registered – a good PR and brand strengthen opportunity!

Uganda’s 50 th Independence
Anniversary in Juba with Gemtel
On October 9th, Gemtel celebrated Uganda Independence Golden
Jubilee, by sponsoring the Event which took place at Nyakuron,
Cultural Center in Juba.
The event brought together the Ugandan and South Sudanese
communities. It enabled to share our cultures and helped us to
celebrate our diversity with dances from our different regions. All
the officials and Diplomats were represented and delighted of such
a joy.
The event was fully Gemtel branded and in style! Interactive games
were organized and winners rewarded with lot of Gemtel goodies
(T-shirts, Caps and Airtime). Gemtel representatives were
promoting and selling as well.
It was a GREAT success! The Ugandan community felt special,
embraced by Gemtel.
Gemtel Perception
Boosted!
One of our biggest challenges has
been to revamp Gemtel negative
customer perception on old offers
and network issue.
However, with our new strategy,
Gemtel is now becoming a fierce
competitor on the market. We’ve
managed to stabilize the market and
started gaining customer trust.
Gemtel’s new tactics to penetrate
the market has been focused more
on social network and mouth of
mouth campaign by using local
people
Back on Track!
Launched on June, the onnet bonus promotion has
been a big achievement.
The impact has been
positive in term of
customer satisfaction and
network
usage
performance.
The first reactions have been incredibly positive and in fact one
of the cases is the outgoing revenue which has increased by
14% as well as daily recharge increased by 20%.
Competition reaction was
weak due to the aggressive
media introduced, Comedy TV
ads in local and English
language, radio ads and daily
