In what way does your media products use,
develop and challenge forms and
conventions of real media products.
USE
USE
- The masthead is the main thing that you will notice that is similar to the one that is used on the Empire magazine, I
have used the same deep coloured red and both mastheads are roughly the same size. It is a very simple fact but
after looking at other magazines all of their mastheads all used simple text on their masthead so this is what I
decided to do also. The only slight difference in the two mastheads is the white outline on the Empire magazine
which makes the masthead look more clean and professional.
-The other things that I used the same was the information above the masthead, as I have used ‘the number one
source for all film information’ and the Empire magazine talked about free posters that are available in the
magazine. I decided to use information above the masthead mainly to fill the blank space that was there before.
- The final thing that I used the same on the Empire magazine is the main film title towards the bottom of the page,
however I have develop this slightly as mine is centred and a slightly higher than the one seen on the Empire
magazine. I decided to centre it simply because I think it will catch the buyers eye more about the main film that the
magazine is going to be based on.
DEVELOP
DEVELOP
- The first thing that I slightly developed on my magazine compared to the Empire magazine was where I
positioned the issue number and price tag, the Empire magazine had positioned it above the letter ‘M’ and I
placed mine in the ‘O’ in Motion. I decided to place it here as I think it is more noticeable as when the reader
picks up and reads the magazine and as they glance over the masthead they would notice how much the
magazine will cost.
- The second that I developed was the main image on the front of the magazine, as you can see from both of the
magazines the focus of them both is one big image, however mine is more of a mid-shot and the Empire
magazine has used a medium close up and the image is on a slight angle. Another way I developed this was that I
added a bloody hand over the face of the character who is the trailer, I added the blood so the users can notice
straight away what genre the magazine is.
- The final thing that I developed is that most magazines have a ‘+’ on the cover to state that there will be
additional information underneath that. I developed it as I decided to centre all of this text including the cover
story lines I also centred whereas on the Empire magazine all of this information is all aligned on the left hand
side of the magazine.
CHALLENGE
CHALLENGE
- The first thing that I challenged is that the character on the front of the Empire magazine is in fact a male
character and is perhaps showing that he is going to be a hero in the film. I challenged this as I went and used a
female character on the cover of my magazine as female are stereotypically known to be more in danger and
vulnerable.
- The other thing that I challenged was that I added ‘163’ new reviews and this is important for people thinking of
what magazine to buy as they will see from the beginning in a big circle how many reviews are included in that
magazine so they know they will be paying to read about a lot of film reviews.
- The final thing that I challenged was at the footer of the magazine I added star names, this is something that you
do sometimes see on magazines but not on this Empire magazine, I think it is important to add star names on the
cover of the magazine as the readers can have some clues of what big names they will be able to read about in my
magazine.
USE
USE
- The first thing that I used on my poster which is the same as on the A nightmare on Elm Street poster is the
location, as you can see from the image both of them are taken in a long corridor, this works well on both posters as
it makes everything seem smaller and makes the female character at the front seem trapped.
- The other thing that I used is that on both posters there is a male character that is the ‘evil’ character on both of
the posters and you can tell this because both of the characters are silhouetted out so there is some mystery around
that character and it makes you wonder what is going to happen to the female character who is below the male and
it looking vulnerable and in danger.
DEVELOP
DEVELOP
- The first thing that I developed from the A nightmare on Elm Street poster is the positioning of the female
character, as you can see from on the A nightmare on Elm Street poster the female character is right below the
male charter and it looking much more in danger than compared to the female character on my poster, this is
because on my poster she is positioned on the right hand side and is hidden in a small indent in the wall and is
holding her mouth as the evil character is looking for her behind the doors behind her.
- The second thing that I developed is the colours, as you can see on my poster I decided to use much more low ley
lighting so that it is much more obvious that it is a horror poster and on the A nightmare on Elm Street poster the
colours that have been used are much more red and there is a light behind the character which makes both of
the characters silhouetted out also adding mystery about what they look like and what is happening.
- The final thing that I developed is the masthead on the poster, as on the A nightmare on Elm Street it is red to
signify blood whereas on mine it fits much more with the whole colour scheme of the poster as I have kept it
white to make it much more clear and stand out. However my masthead is on the left hand side of the poster
whereas on the other poster it is positioned beneath the characters.
CHALLENGE
CHALLENGE
- I challenged the A nightmare on Elm Street poster as first of all the location seems to be in a house or hotel
whereas in my poster it is obvious it is in a school or a college and I think this is a good location as people
watching this will be able to relate to the location much more as the target audience are mainly students.
- The next thing that I challenged is that on my poster I included the main cast members at the top of my poster so
it is much more noticeable whereas on the other poster there isn’t anything that visible of any of the cast
members that are included, I think it is important to include the cast members because the viewers looking at the
poster would like to see who is in the film before they go on and see it.
- The final thing that I challenged was that I added star ratings from top newspapers whereas the other poster did,
when asking my target audience they thought it would be a good idea to include this as if top newspapers and
magazines are giving it a good rating then this will spread the word and make people talk about the film and go
on and see it.
