Defination -a toothpaste or dentrifrice is a substance used
with a toothbrush for the purpose of cleaning the accessible
surface of the teeth.
Purpose
• Polishing
• Cleaning
• Removal of stain
• Reduce incidence of tooth decay
• Reduction of oral malodors

12. Mechanism Of Action
The abrasive agent in tooth paste physically
removes the solid particles in oral cavity by
abrasive action.
• Antiseptic action- tooth paste contains
antimicrobial agents such as xylitol which
inhibits growth of bacteria in mouth which is
especially harmful in gingivitis

Defination- tooth powder is a mildly abrasive

almost twice the abrasive action than that of
tooth paste

the powders by drying slurrries containing the
extremely finely divided polishing agent,a
detergent and a small amount of binder
