3. BSA Fees Increase
• The BSA membership
fee is going up as of 1
December 2017.
• The new fee will be $34
per year.

recognize unit Scouters for tenure, training, and
performance in their leadership roles.

10. Christmas Parade and Picnic
Saturday, December 9, 2017
• Meet in the parking lot of the Courthouse
• 9:30-10:30 (you cannot park at the Courthouse)
• Wear your uniform and a Christmas hat!
• Bring non-perishable food to donate to the food bank
• Wear a backpacking backpack or day pack (carry your
lunch and we will have a picnic together at the end of the
parade).

14. Winter Camp
• Calling all units….are you tough enough to camp in the winter? The 1st
Annual Camp Durant Winter Blast is a great opportunity to work on merit
badges and have fun. A total of 28 merit badge classes will be offered;
merit badge classes are taught by adults.
– Date: 12-15 January
– Register your unit at https://occoneechee.tentaroo.com/ and select Winter Camp.
– Registration opens October 2, 2017 (hold participant slots)
– Merit Badge Selection: November 1, 2017 thru December 29, 2017.
– Cost: $90/Scout; $50/Adult
• Register early; this event is limited to 400 Scouts. Additional details will
be emailed to unit leaders after registration.
• IOLS will also be offered. Class is limited to 25 adults. The cost is $50
and includes meals and a cabin assignment.

• Highlander District is now able to offer free web
space to Highlander units. (that’s right, free – it won’t
cost you anything but time)
• You will get your own sub-domain (e.g.

• Units should designate a Unit Webmaster who has
some basic computer knowledge build and maintain
their site.

20. Service Hour Reporting
• Who: All Scouting groups are encouraged to participate in this service project
initiative.
• What: This is a time for all Scouting groups to conduct meaningful, visible
service projects of their choice in their communities. You are encouraged to
discuss and choose your projects with the help of your Scouts, committee, and
chartered organization.
• Where: Service projects can be done for your chartered organization or for the
cause of your choice. Projects done in collaboration with other organizations are
highly recommended.
• When: Projects may be conducted at any time.
• Why: Scouting was founded on the premise of doing a Good Turn daily.
Community service is very important in the character-building process and, as
Scouts, we have made the commitment to give back to our communities.

21. North Carolina Concealed Carry
Handgun (CCH) Class
• Date: 16 December 2017
• Location: Fayetteville Area off of the 295 and 95
corridor.
• Cost: $80 (Proceeds benefit Friends of Scouting)

To obtain a CCH Permit, North Carolina requires qualified residents to
successfully complete an approved firearms safety and training
course.
This course meets all NC law requirements. It provides the required 8
hours of training; including the fundamentals of gun safety, gun
operation, ammunition, and shooting techniques as well as the laws
governing the use of deadly force.

27. ScoutBook Advancement Sync
• ALL units with active Scoutbook subscriptions have now been
invited to the Scoutbook Advancement Record Sync with
ScoutNet. The Scoutbook Unit Admins have been notified
and given instructions on how to activate the sync.
• All units must be activated by December 31, 2017.
• The user guide on activating the sync is at:

sync please send an email to: Scoutbooksync@gmail.com.
• Starting January 1, 2018 units with active Scoutbook
subscriptions will only be able to approve advancements for
Scouts who are in the advancement sync.

28. Red Cross offers Service Hours
Troops and Crews – the Red Cross needs your help!
• The Red Cross installs smoke alarms in poorer
neighborhoods – they are looking for volunteers to
train and do the installs (Service Hours!)
• The Red Cross is willing to offer some classes in
“Hands only” CPR to Troops and Crews at no charge
Leaders – get in touch with The Red Cross if you are
interested in your Troop or Crew helping with installs
of smoke detectors!
