Justan Walks to raise awareness regarding
the stigmas of mental illness and suicide
prevention.

Justan Walks
My son, Justan (pictured right) suffered from
mental illness. In 2013, he attempted suicide.
Subsequently, Justan is no longer with us. For
this reason I created Justan Walks, my passion.
Justan Walks is a non-profit organization who’s
prime focus is to educate others regarding the
harm of mental illness stigmas and to promote
suicide prevention through education and access
to care. Currently, I assist parents of adult
children who suffer from mental illness. I help
them find resources such as mental hospitals,
provide caretaker support when dealing with
hospitals, identify court requirements for
involuntary admits, coordinate jailhouse liaison
between client, MHMR, and the police, and
offer referral services to local counselors.
Mid- Term Goal:
I will officially open the doors of
Justan Walks on October 8,
2020….

I included this photograph because it is evidence of my passion to make a
difference through volunteer work with NAMI. It also exemplifies my
ability to organize and motivate a group to action for a common yet
unpopular cause. A skill that is needed at any level of administration.
The picture is of our Justan Walks team walking in
the 2014 Greater Houston NAMIWalks in memory
of Justan and to raise public awareness of mental
illness. Until that day my family and friends were
hesitant discuss the connection between Justan’s
death and mental illness. We raised money and
began the conversation.
