My name is Patrick (Paddy) McGovern.
Actually, my full name is Lawrence Patrick Joseph John Francis McGovern.
Yeah, that is quite the mouthful, I know.
My parents were Irish, and it is an Irish tradition to name a child after as many
saints as possible in the hope that the child will grow up to emulate the positive
characteristics of at least one of them. And while I cannot, in good conscience, claim
sainthood, I can honestly state that I will be a profitable and positive addition to your
work-team.
I am a graduate of the University of California Irvine (the fighting anteaters!).
My bachelor’s degree is in Philosophy. Although a familiarity with Kant’s Categories
and Plato’s Forms and Sartre’s existentialism is not immediately applicable to any
particular job, other than Professor of Philosophy, the study of philosophy does establish
and reinforce three key cognitive skills, specifically:
to perceive critically
to think logically
to express coherently
Immodest though it is for me to say, I am very smart. I am very well educated. I
know how to learn and how to learn quickly.
I worked for over sixteen years in Emergency Medical Services, including 13
years as a member of the trauma response team at an urban Level 1 Trauma Center. I
thoroughly appreciate the absolutely ephemeral nature of life and the completely
capricious character of death. I have a solid perspective on what is truly important. I am
comfortable with stress, and I function exceptionally well in chaos, although I loathe
tumult, and I am unrelentingly dedicated to a peaceful and harmonious environment.
I have been an office manager and business consultant. I have hired, and I have
fired. I have supervised shifts, and I have worked shifts. I have handled vendors, and I
have negotiated contracts. I have constructed budgets, and I have written contracts. I
have been responsible for meeting payroll. I have pitched product and made scores of
presentations. I have built capitalization tables, deconstructed the table and rebuilt the
table. I have sat in meetings until my rear end was numb, and kept on smiling. I have
shuffled paperwork from dawn to dusk. I truly enjoy all aspects of business and
enterprise and commerce. I believe wholeheartedly in business, and while I
unapologetically value profit, I treasure entrepreneurial success much more. Making
2. money is essential to business, and I never take my eyes off of that prize, but real success
is, in my opinion, far, far more than just the mindless reaping of profit.
I have been technical writer and editor. I have worked with Microsoft Excel,
Word, Access and PowerPoint and with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences
(SPSS). I would say that I have an “executive summary” personality in that I am fond of
detail, but quick to grasp the essential.
I am bright and affable and well spoken. I completed the International Tour
Manager and the Tour Guide courses at the International Guide Academy of Denver in
2004. I am professionally accommodating, tolerant and easygoing. I have lead tours
both overseas and domestically. I like people, and, honestly, people like me. I am
studiously easygoing.
I most recently worked for “Leanin’ Tree”, here in Boulder, as an inside sales
representative. The company is wonderful, the people there are just outstanding, but it
turned out not to be a good fit. Sadly, greeting cards are going the way of newspapers
and magazines. The sales in greeting cards is diminishing yearly as the older generation
still values them, but the younger generation does not use them. I was let go after the
holiday season because the sales were just not there.
Before that I worked for 2 and a half years for Comcast Cable, working as a
Residential Field Sales Account Executive and Residential Account Manager. That was
door-to-door and face-to-face, and I liked it and I did well. I left only because I was
diagnosed with skin cancers and although the cancers were easily disposed of, the
company did not want to risk any liability by having me out in the sun.
Prior to that, I worked as a founding officer of Lanahan and Associates
Manufacturing. We fabricated an industrial chemical, namely “polyacrylamide”, which
has application in bio-tech, water treatment and in deep water oil drilling. I was brought
in when the company was just starting up to flesh out the nascent organizational skeleton,
to establish sales accounts and to handle communications and correspondence. We began
with 4 people and we ended up with 54. Unfortunately, the principal founders of the
company were a husband and wife who went through an acrimonious divorce. They sold
the process to DuPont Chemical, and the company was dissolved.
I also worked as a personal assistant to a couple of retired college professors; one
who needed help with spreadsheet and database work, and one who needed help with
relocation and end-of-life issues. I am very, very organized. I happily refer you to Dr.
Thomas Masterson Ph.D., retired Physics professor Colorado University Boulder, who
can vouch for my meticulous, sometimes annoying, dedication to detail.
And, for the past 10 years, I have worked, intermittently, both as a volunteer and
as an independent contractor directly employed by clients and their families, as a hospice
home care coordinator. I am a member of the National Association for Home Care and
Hospice.
3. On the personal side, I do not drink; decades ago I reached an understanding with
my ulcers, and both sides have ever since strictly honored the deal. I do not drug
(prescription or otherwise). I do not gamble. I do not smoke. I am blessed with excellent
health. I am not married. I have no children. I have no tattoos nor piercings nor jewelry
of any type; I am not against any of that, it is just not me. I know who I am. I live my
own life. I let others live theirs. I am, in most ways, comfortably conventional and “old
school”.
I have submitted to four national background checks (FBI) within the past two
years, as well as three city background checks, specifically for the cities of Boulder and
Broomfield and Superior, as well as four drug screenings, so I can safely state that I am
certifiably trustworthy and harmless.
I know where I excel. I know where I fall short. I play to my strong suit, which
is helping others, and I happily and graciously defer to the skills and strengths of those
around me. I am an accompanist and facilitator. I take pride in improving the lives of
others as best I can while still minding my own business and not sticking my nose in
where it does not belong. I do as I am directed, and I proudly do it well.
Please, do check with my last boss, Ryan Pacheco, or my boss before him, Scott
Helgesen or any of my references. They will tell you that I am easy-going, dedicated to
the company/organizations success and I was the hardest worker they had on their team.
I am proud of work ethic.
I have had an untypical life, but a life that exposed me to the good and the bad
and the ugly, and, in the end, it is a life that has enriched my skills, broadened my
perspective and forged my values.
I have excellent references.
I have a good work history.
I will be a good addition to your work-team.
Thank you for your consideration,
L. Patrick (Paddy) McGovern

I worked for several years as a personal assistant to Dr. William Cernak, Ph.D.
Sadly, he passed away. I cannot exactly put him down as a reference, so in lieu I offer
the manager of the upscale apartment complex in Boulder CO where I have lived since
2004. For legal reasons, they cannot give a job recommendation, but they have agreed to
vouch for my rent accountability and my neighborliness.
