Polymorphism refers to the ability of an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) to exist in two or more crystalline forms. Crystalline solids can exhibit isotropic properties, meaning their physical properties are identical when measured in any direction, or anisotropic properties, where the properties differ depending on the direction of measurement. An API may crystallize into different polymorphic forms that are isotropic or anisotropic.
