INTRODUCTION
 Social work emerged
as a profession in
Early 20th century
 It works under main
theme of promoting well-
being and quality of life of
people across continents
APARTHEID PERIOD
• This run all through from 1948 to
1990s
• This was racial segregation where
by the countries minority
group(whites were given priority
and school and other institutions
were separated according to
ethnics and races
Apartheid laws
 The Race Classification Act. Every
citizen suspected of not being
European was classified
according to race.
 The Mixed Marriages Act. It
prohibited marriage between
people of different races.
 The Group Areas Act. It forced
people of certain races into living
in designated areas.
Learning Objectives
• National Association of Social Workers,
South Africa, was launched in September
2007
• The country's first unified, non-racial
social work association represented a
significant transition from apartheid to
democracy
When first democratic elections were
done in 1994 the host of legislative
and policy directives
services be provided separately (and unequally)
for the different race groups.
Social workers to provide services to the people
of their designated race
Different universities to be based on races
Trains, buses, taxis, hotels, hospitals, schools
and colleges, libraries, cinema halls, theaters,
