 ICT is becoming increasingly important to
improve the economy of the world.
 Wireless communication networks are
perhaps the most critical element in the
global ICT. It is one of the fastest growing
and dynamic sector in the world.
 The phenomenal success of wireless mobile
communications is mirrored by a rapid pace
of technology innovation.
 1980s, 2.4kbps, analog system, low
capacity, unreliable handoff, poor
voice links, and no security.
2nd Generation (2G)
 Late 1990s, digital system, 64 kbps,
voice and sms services, GSM, CDMA,
and IS95.
 with GPRS and EDGE called 2.5G, can
assist data rates upto 144kbps.
 Late 2000, IP based, 128 Kbps for mobile
stations, and 2 Mbps for fixed applications
WCDMA, UMTS, CDMA 2000, Requires more
power.
 HSUPA/HSDPA and EVDO named as 3.5G with
improved data rate of 5-30 Mbps.
4th Generation (4G)
 IP based, data rates of up to 1Gb/s for low
mobility, such as nomadic/local wireless
access, and up to 100Mb/s for high mobility,
LTE, LTE-A.
 It has been predicted by the Wireless World
Research Forum (WWRF) that 7 trillion
wireless devices will serve 7 billion people
by 2017; that is, the number of network-
connected wireless devices will reach 1000
times the world’s population.
 It has a expected speed of 1gbps.
 Lower cost than the previous version.
 With an exponential increase in the demand
of the users, 4G will now be easily replaced
with 5G.
As a result of this blending of requirements,
it is commonly assumed that 5G cellular
networks must address following challenges:
 1-10Gbps connections to end points in the
field (i.e. not theoretical maximum)
 1 millisecond end-to-end round trip delay
(latency)
 1000x bandwidth per unit area
 10-100x number of connected devices
 (Perception of) 99.999% availability
 (Perception of) 100% coverage
 90% reduction in network energy usage
 Up to ten year battery life for low power,
machine-type devices
