Revised Assure Assignment
This unit was planned to teach a fourth grade class about holidays. This class contains 20
students which contains 11 girls and 9 boys. Of these 20 students there are 2 Muslims, 3 Jewish,
and 2 African American. These students will have a better understanding of different holidays
that are both familiar and unfamiliar. For one week the class will be focusing on December
holidays utilizing each day for a different holiday. They will have a 100% better understanding
of each holiday by the end of the week.
To give students more time to learn about each of the holidays, the lesson will be spread
out through the week and each holiday will be taught on separate days. Monday being
Hanukkah. Tuesday is Christmas. Wednesday will be Kwanza. Thursday will be Dhu al Hijjah
and Friday will a review and celebration of everything.
To ensure that the students understand each holiday, we will sing songs and read stories.
Each day will have a story and song based on the holiday played through podcasts for the class to
follow along. These podcasts will be recorded using my voice. Along with this there will be
posters placed around the room with different ways of saying “Happy Holidays.” These signs
will help the class in pronouncing each one correctly.
Each student will also use the web 2.0 website, Pinterest, to find different recipes for the
holidays. Pinterest is a great way to find many different things. Every student will be asked to
make a sample and bring it into the class on Friday for our end of the week celebration.
The class will also be broken up into small groups to discuss and present a separate
holiday which will be presented on Friday. Each group will have a webquest to complete that
2. goes along with their holiday to ensure that they have all necessary assignments and information.
The webquest will include movies, websites, and games for each of the five holidays that are
being researched. Each group member will be given a different role in order to keep the work
evenly divided.
After completing the webquest the groups will be presenting on a poster board, which I
will provide. This poster should be full of color and information about the holiday. Along with
that, each group will perform a song found on YouTube about whatever holiday you have. The
webquest will include finding the origin of the holiday which will also need to be a part of the
presentation.
Each student is required to work within and out of the group. Participation in the events
of the week are important. I will be asking questions as we go to ensure that the students
understand and I encourage questions and feedback. I ask that each student evaluate their
projects in order for myself to revise the lesson.
