After School Programs
Registration information and class offerings will be sent electronically later in the summer. There
will also be a preview of programs at Registration Day on Monday, August 15th.
Questions: email Christine Pratt at cpratt@thejoyschool.org.
School Supplies & Technology
The Joy School provides all basic school supplies for all students. All students should bring a
backpack, and Middle School students need a binder. A technology letter will be sent later in the
summer indicating student computer needs. Eighth grade math students will need a graphing
calculator TI-84 Plus Silver Edition — either the regular or the C edition. The C is rechargeable
and it has color.
Hot Lunch Catering Program
The Joy School offers catered hot lunch options. The menu and registration form will be available
later this summer. This year we are using Jason’s Deli and Domino’s Pizza for hot lunch.
Questions: email Leslie Smith at lsmith@thejoyschool.org.
Carpooling
We will have carpool lists categorized by zip code available shortly after school starts. Please do
not feel pressured to participate. However, many families use this contact information to make
friends with their neighbors and save a few dollars on gas. Contact Leslie Smith after school
starts for help with carpooling.
Questions: email Leslie Smith at lsmith@thejoyschool.org.

Dear Joy School Families,
At TJS we strive to put the joy back in learning. While the focus is on our students, there are also many opportunities
for parents to get involved and discover joy.
Ifyouwant to learn about getting involved, the ParentAssociation Meeting is the perfect place to start. Unlike traditional
parent associations, this group doesn’t require monthly meetings with long agendas. The Parent Association allows
you flexibility. You’ll get the chance to meet other parents while supporting faculty and contributing to the School
community.
In addition to volunteering, parents support The Joy School’s mission through our two fundraising events. You can
learn more about each below. Your participation enhances our academic programs, learning environment and
facilities. The safe, supportive educational environment we provide for students with learning differences would not
be possible without your amazing support!
The Joy School is filled with wonderful and dedicated families. I look forward to working with you on behalf of all our
students!
Sincerely,
Deborah Kirkland

fundraising efforts, ensuring TJS can deliver our
special brand of education based on small classes,

17 Annual Fund Parent Chairs in September!
Where do the funds go?
Gifts to the Annual Fund support the School’s
operating budget. A few items the Annual Fund
allows the School to provide:
• Highly trained faculty and staff with competitive
compensation
• Student Financial Aid
• Remedial support from faculty specialists
• Full-time speech-language pathologists
• Faculty and staff training, conferences,
workshops and more!

The Annual Luncheon
Every year, parents look forward to this highly-
anticipated Houston community event. Our
Luncheon features a distinguished guest speaker
who discusses topics that interest educational
professionals, parents, business leaders and more.
Save the date: February 23, 2017
Where do the funds go?
Proceeds from the Luncheon primarily benefit the
Student Financial Aid Fund, which supports children
who would not otherwise have the opportunity to
attend The Joy School.
In addition, funds generated from the Luncheon are
combined with Annual Fund gifts to help meet the
School’s operating needs.

Incorrect, Late, & Missing Records
Late and/or missing student records put our entire school community at risk and cost us greatly in
terms of time and resources. Missing and/or outdated student records also jeopardize our compliance
with state laws and our accrediting organization. Most importantly, missing student records prevent us
from protecting your child and communicating with you in the event of an emergency!

9:00 a.m. August 8 and 9:00 a.m. August 15 — $500
9:00 a.m. August 15 and 12:00 p.m. August 16 — $1,000
All student paperwork must be received by 9:00 a.m. on August 1, 2016.
Non-compliance will result in financial penalties
as well as suspension of enrollment.
Please Note:
Due to processing and communication requirements (for your child’s safety), all
documents must be received 24 hours BEFORE a child’s first day of attendance.
In addition to the $1,000 penalty, students with incomplete or missing paperwork
after 12:00 p.m. August 16, 2016 will not be allowed to start school August 17.

1. ALL medications require a signed permission slip on hand before they can
be administered. This applies to ANY medication, including prescription
drugs, cough drops, eye drops, Advil, etc. Please do not send children to
school with any medication without a medicine permission slip.
2. ALL medications must be kept in their original container. We must have
the actual current prescription bottle with the child’s name typed by the
pharmacist, or the medication must be in the bottle or box in which it is
sold.
3. We only give medication dosages according to label instructions. The Joy
School will only be dispensing regular prescription medications from
11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
4. You will be asked for permission to give over the counter medications
to your child should he or she become sick at school. You will be called
for verbal permission for that particular day before any medication is
administered.
5. All dosages given at school will be documented and kept on file for three
months.
6. We cannot give any single medication for more than 15 school days in a
row without a permission slip from your child’s physician.
Medication Policies & Procedures
These policies are mandated by the Texas Department of Human Resources
Please Note:
The form required for medication use at school will be sent to you electronically,
or you can fill out the hard copy in this packet.
If you know your child will be on daily medication, please have your physician fill
out the form this summer.
If during the school year it becomes necessary for your child to receive daily
medication, or a change in dosage or medication becomes necessary, we will
need you to update the form.
This form is required for medications given during school hours for more than 15 school
days. School dispensing times are between 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and at 2:00 p.m.
I give permission for the physician listed below to exchange information

required immunizations have been received. The treating physician must be licensed to

requesting a medical exemption must present valid written evidence to The Joy School
from theirtreating physician, reflecting the medicalbasis forthe requested exemption. The

Immunization Policy
Effective July 1, 2015
Statement from the Texas Attorney General
“Conscientious objections or waivers, which may be permissible for attendance in
public schools, do not qualify as an exemption in Private Schools. A private school
that does not accept state tax funds is not required to accept for enrollment a child
who has received an exemption for the immunizations required by the Texas Health
and Safety Code. (Atty. Gen. OP GA-0420).”

  • 10. Dear Joy School Families, At TJS we strive to put the joy back in learning. While the focus is on our students, there are also many opportunities for parents to get involved and discover joy. Ifyouwant to learn about getting involved, the ParentAssociation Meeting is the perfect place to start. Unlike traditional parent associations, this group doesn’t require monthly meetings with long agendas. The Parent Association allows you flexibility. You’ll get the chance to meet other parents while supporting faculty and contributing to the School community. In addition to volunteering, parents support The Joy School’s mission through our two fundraising events. You can learn more about each below. Your participation enhances our academic programs, learning environment and facilities. The safe, supportive educational environment we provide for students with learning differences would not be possible without your amazing support!
