2. LEGEND OF THE PINEAPPLE
Once upon a time, there was a poor woman who lived with her daughter Pina
in a tiny hut in the village. The mother worked day and night for their needs
but, no matter how hard she worked, she never got any help from her
daughter. Pina was spoiled and lazy, who only want to play in the all day.
Whenever her mother asked for help or let her do or get something she
always find an excuse by saying she can not find it or saying she couldn't see
it even if it was right in front of her.
One day, her mother became very ill and can not wake up to do the chores.
She tried to called out Pina. But her daughter is reluctant because she knows
that her mother will assign some chores to her. But her mother is angry so
she went inside the house and ask what the matter. Her mother says, I can
not wake up and cook, my body is so weak. Can you cook for our food. Pina is
muttering saying that is a very hard work to do. She said that she doesn't
know how to it. Her mother patiently instructed her and tells her that
everything she needed is right there in the kitchen.
While murmuring she went to the kitchen. Her mother could hear the
banging of drawers and cabinets. After a while Pina is shouting telling that
she can not find the things she needed even though it is infront of her. She is
shouting like, "I can not see the pot, I can not see the water, I can not see
the matches, and the rice" even if she is looking at it. Her mother wept
bitterly. In because of her anger, she shouted, “I wish you will have many
eyes for you to find what you’re looking for."
Because she is sick her body is weak so she slept and did not mind Pina.
When she wakes up she called out for Pina many times but no one is
answering her. Until she feels better, days passed but Pina is nothing to find.
She tried to look for her but she can not find her. One day, she was
sweeping the backyard where Pina used to play. She noticed a strange plant
growing on the very spot where Pina always stay. As days passed by she saw
the plant having fruit that have many eyes. And she remember the curse she
uttered to her daughter, with regrets she take care of the plant and to
remember her child she named the fruit "Pina" later evolved to pinya, or
pineapple in English.
And this is the legend of the pineapple according to folklore, named after a
spoiled child who was cursed with many eyes. This story was told by my
parents when we were little and sometimes we disobey them. The
connection of the story to me is, it teach me about obedience and learning
