OUR MOUNTAIN STORY
would not be possible without the
generous support and kindness of the
Lingee-Payong community
Conceptualized by Carrie Soo Hoo and Ian Garland, SIT Study Abroad ILF Sikkim
Summer 2015 students in collarboration with communities from Lingee-Payong Village.
OUR OUNTAIN STORY
Introduction
Everyone has a story. However, not everyone is encouraged
to share it. Often times, the diverse stories of children are
last to be heard. But every story is a piece of history that
deserves to be recognized.
Stories have the power to instill a sense of creativity and
confidence in our children. The writing process encourages
children to reflect, imagine, and aspire. It is a journey.
Children form Lingee-Payong came together to play,
engage, and collaborate. Together we created a story about
food. Each brought their unique personalities,
perspectives, and ideas to form Our Mountain Story.
The Plan for the Day
To get the creative juices flowing, we played some fun food
themed games and then transitioned into writing our story.
Vegetable Game
Kids call out names of vegetables (all foods encouraged)
and everyone acts them out in their own style.
Food Moves
Things get spicy as food is combined with music to make
food dance moves. Kids create their own dance inspired by
the group’s favorite foods.
Let’s Get Cooking
The group decides on a meal to cook and act out various
aspects of the cooking process such as harvesting, washing,
cutting, stirring, frying, and of course eating! Everyone
contributes to the meal.
Playback Theater
One kid shares a memory about food and the rest act out a
piece. The product is a living story.
Pass it
Kids sitting in circle write a sentence or two and pass the
story to the next person. When the story is received, it is
read aloud and added to. Writing is a process. It cannot be
timed. The group feels when it is done.
I Was Very Hungry
I woke up early in the morning. Today, when I woke up, I
was very hungry. After I woke up, I had my morning
breakfast. I was very hungry, so I went home to eat some
food. Today, when I woke up, I drank milk. Today, I ate
many foods in the morning.
Then something happened. I went out to work. I went to
the field, plucked the tomato, and ate it. It was very tasty.
Then I started working. When I was working in the field,
my mother called me.
Why did she call me? She called me to make tomato sauce.
I also helped her make curry and some rice. After that, I
helped her to wash some vegetables and cut some fruit.
After that, I cut the vegetables that I washed and made a
fruit salad which I would eat for my lunch.
Before lunch, I went to the market. Then I ate lunch.
Lunch was delicious. My mother made delicious food
today. Then I told my mother, “The food is delicious.
Thank you mother.” My mother said, “Welcome.” We ate
delicious food, and we enjoyed it so much.
What I Ate for Lunch
Today was Sunday holiday. Today, I woke up at 6 o’clock. I
washed by face and brushed my teeth. I helped my mother
go to the jungle to cut grass. Then I returned back home
with mother. I got ready for school.
When I got home, something happened in the kitchen. I
saw a cat taking all the meat which we were going to eat
for lunch. I ran towards the cat, but unfortunately I
couldn’t catch him. After, I informed my mom and she
convinced us not to worry. I was no longer worried, but
then I saw the cat in the garden. The cat was tearing the
meat. Then next to the cat I saw a dog staring at the meat.
The dog wanted the meat so he quarreled with cat.
Then I had vegetables for lunch. The end.
Food for the Day
I walked out of my room. I went outside. I wanted to eat
something, so I made some food to eat. I made momo.
Then I was ready to eat momo.
I wanted to play, so I played football. I like to play football.
I like to play ludo. I like to run. I like to eat mango. I like to
eat apples.
After playing, I got very hungry so I asked my mother to
help me make something for dinner. I took a rest before
dinner, and after that, we had dinner together and went to
sleep.
Growing Plants
I woke up in the morning. I saw a tomato in the morning.
The tomato was very tasty. After that, I went to the
kitchen. I saw too many tomatoes in the kitchen. I asked
my mother to give me some tomatoes to make some sauce
to spread on the bread to make a sandwich, which I can eat
at breakfast.
Piro! Piro! The tomato was a chili! So, I drank water. Then I
asked my mother why she mixed the chili in the sauce.
Mother said she mixed the chili in the sauce because it
tastes good. I thought the sauce was very hot because
there was lots of chili in the sauce.
Then it was time for my chores for the day. But first, I
went to church and prayed to Jesus and then I went home
and prayed to god.
Then I ate breakfast. Then I went out to look at the
vegetables. In the garden, there were a lot of vegetables
like potato, pumpkin, carrot, radish etc. I watered the
plants to make them bigger and strong. I will bring
chemicals from the shop. But it made them sick.
Then the next day, I saw that my plants were spoiled. I was
very worried about my plants. Then I thought about what
made them spoiled. And then I realized that it is my fault
that I put chemicals on them. I was very sad then.
My Home
My home is located near the school. It is small but very
beautiful. Near our home, there is a road. There is a car on
the road that travels to earn money. We see lots of cars.
I clean around my house. I clean the window and sweep all
around the house.
I love my home very much. Because our home gives us
shelter, we care for our home very much.
Food Kheer
Today I woke up at 5 o’clock. I washed my face, brushed my
teeth, and drank tea and milk. Then I cooked food. After I
cooked food, I went to school. After school, I went home
and ate lunch. I then played football and studied. Then, in
the evening, I cooked kheer and ate it. Kheer was made of
milk, rice, sugar, coconut, kaju and kismis. The food was
very sweet. I then watched some television and slept.
