Cell Division: Mitosis
Students
Life Science Grade 10
Purpose of lesson:
The students will be able to recognize the stages of mitosis and identify the amount of
time spent in mitosis.
Objective:
Understand the importance of cellular division to living organisms
Know the phases of mitosis and what is occurring at each phase
Adaptation:
Lesson plan adapted from Smart Exchange lesson on Cell division found here and
lesson on identifying the steps of mitosis found here.
Standards:
SCI.10.2.B: Explain the characteristics of life as indicated by cellular processes and
describe the process of cell division and development.
Key Questions:
What are the stages of cell division?
Does the cell stop at the end of each stage prior to proceeding to the next stage?
Does the time spent in each division equally distributed throughout the cycle?
Procedure:
I will keep the smartboard lesson the same I will just add a few other components to the
lesson that include a youtube video and an interactive computer program.
The lesson will begin by watching a youtube video of mitosis as it happens. Link found
here. Then the class will go over the Smartboard lesson on cell division. This is an
interactive lesson, which involves students using the smartboard to answer questions
about mitosis. Students will be divided up into groups of two. Students will access a
website about onion root cell division:
http://www.biology.arizona.edu/cell_bio/activities/cell_cycle/activity_description.html
The students will work together to identify the phases of cell division in the onion root
cell. For students that would prefer not to use the computer, a paper copy will be given
to them to identify the phases of cell division.
Assessment:
After the students have completed the exercise, the students will discuss their findings.
Included in the discussion, which cell phase was hardest to identify and why? (should
have been interphase and propahse. Differences can be due to the fact that the nucleus
is not clearly defined in all intephase cells.)
UDL:
Multiple means of engagement: Begin by watching a video, then interactive lesson
using smartboard, followed by group work on either the computer or on paper identifying
the phases of cell division
