The first films were made by the Lumiere
brothers‟ in 1895. They created a camera
which could only hold 50 seconds of film stock.
Their films were also unedited and only
captured life around them. These types of film
were called “Actualites”

In 1922, John Grierson used the word
„Documentary‟ whilst reviewing „Nanook of the
North‟ by Robert Flaherty. This was the first
official documentary. Flaherty manipulated the
audience into believing that all of the footage
they were seeing was true; when in fact most
of it was staged.

In 1936, Griersons‟ produced his biggest
achievement „Night Mail‟. This informed people
of the work involved when taking post from
London to Edinburgh. This film was relevant
due to Royal Mail becoming privatised during
this time.
John strongly believed that documentaries
should be used to educate as well as entertain
and often used poetic sounds in his work.

This style was started in the 50‟s and 60‟s.
It‟s a French cinema movement which uses
hand held camera work, diegetic sound and
natural lighting. It‟s simplicity convinces the
audience that they‟re directly viewing the film
without any editing.

Mockumentaries were popular in the 1980‟s
and is a modern type of documentary which
adds comedy to the film. This is used to
entertain the audience.
