- 1. HOW TO HELP WITHOUT HURTING By Katia Morales
- 2. Although 90% of Americans now days are involved in some kind of charity industry, that help can mainly be translated in ineffective care, or even harm
- 3. But how can charity can be harmful? Dependency and destroying personal initiative.
- 4. When we do what people in a community can do by themselves, we disempower them.
- 5. Most work done by volunteers could be better done by locals in less time and with better results. As well it harms the economy. Nothing can compete with free.
- 6. Then, how can we help effectively? By understanding that success breeds success
- 7. Instead of just giving, help them to get it by themselves. Promote entrepreneurship. Promote free trade. Invest in infrastructure. Secure reasonable loans, not grants
- 8. Don’t subsidize poverty. Reinforce productive work. Create producers, not beggars. Invest in self-sufficiency
- 9. Many poor communities need to feel the joy of succeeding. This inspires future action and
- 10. A good example of this system are thrift stores. People work to buy what they need, it’s not just given away. And the cost is affordable
- 11. That doesn’t mean we should not offer immediate help on disasters
- 12. But if that help is still present and needed in a community after 40 years then there’s something we are doing wrong.
