Cal Poly Pomona’s junior
guard Quentin Taylor is jug-
gling classes while devoting
his time to the Bronco bas-
ketball team.
As a third-year kinesiol-
ogy student, Taylor strives
to pursue a career in physi-
cal education, incorporating
what he learns in the class-
room and on the court.
“I love it so far, espe-
cially getting into my major
classes and doing the thing
I love, which is basketball,”
said Taylor. “So it’s a great
combination, you know, to
intertwine kinesiology and
basketball. I learn a lot from
both.”
Shooting hoops and tak-
ing control of the court is
Taylor’s way of escaping the
real world from time to time.
“I love basketball. … It’s
just everything,” said Taylor.
“It’s just something to keep
your mind focused [on],
[apart from] distractions and
all that. You can just keep
[your] focus on basketball.
It’s hard to explain; it’s just
love and passion.”
According to Taylor,
as a young team, the CPP
men’s basketball team has to
“grind it out” and stick with
its key to success for every
game, which is playing de-
fense.
“Sincethefirstdayofprac-
tice, right then and there, we
just knew we had to be one
of those tough teams,” said
Taylor. “[We’re] always a
tough team, but this year for
us is just amazing so far.”
Head Coach Greg Kaman-
sky referred to Taylor as a
leader.
“He is the guy who is al-
ways there,” said Kamansky.
“[He is] so reliable every
practice [and] every game.
There’s never a moment
when I look at him [and]
I’m like, ‘what’s wrong with
Quentin?’ He’s always there
and always competing at a
high level every single time,
and that is so hard to find.”
Kamansky believes that
Taylor is a great shooter but
is also a guy that does a little
bit of everything.
“He’s the
[ m o s t
s o l i d ]
person
I’ve ever met,” said Kaman-
sky. “He really is. He’s the
guy that will do anything
for his teammates. ... He’ll
make any sacrifice he can,
and that kind of tells you
who he is. I love coaching
him. He’s just a pleasure to
have in our program. We’re
very lucky [to have Taylor].”
People can’t help but no-
tice Taylor’s unique hairdo.
According to Taylor, he’s
been rocking a flattop hair-
style since high school.
“His flattop is his signa-
ture,” said senior forward
Jordan Faison. “He defi-
nitely comes correct, look-
ing right every game day.
That’s his trademark. That’s
all him.”
According to Faison, the
team is lucky to have a play-
er like Taylor.
“You can play him at pret-
ty much any position,” said
Faison. “He’s really diverse
in his arsenal for his game.
He’s a very valuable player
in our team, and he’s always
going 110 percent. He’s al-
ways so active, and that’s
something you can’t teach
players. You either have it or
you don’t.”
Not only is Faison Tay-
lor’s teammate, they are also
roommates of two years.
“He’s a good guy on the
court and off the court,” said
Faison. “He’s a really good
friend, and he’s a really good
roommate. I’m just lucky to
have him in my life and on
the team.”
According to Faison,
Taylor and he have a great
friendship. Faison joked
around saying he would set
up a match against Taylor
in the video game “NBA
2K16” for anyone who
wants to challenge him.
“He’s a terrible 2K play-
er,” Faison said.

THE POLY POST 11Tuesday, January 26, 2016
The Cal Poly Pomona
men’s basketball team got
back to its winning ways
after defeating the Hum-
boldt State Jacks 86-76 at
home on Saturday.
“It was very important,”
said senior forward Jordan
Faison. “It was a must win
game, and we got the job
done.”
“I liked the way we
played tonight,” said Head
Coach Greg Kamansky.
“We played with energy
and confidence,”
With the win, the Bron-
cos improved their over-
all record to 15-3, with an
8-3 mark in the California
Collegiate Athletic Asso-
ciation. CPP remains unde-
feated at home, as its team
is 8-0 at Kellogg Arena.
In front of 1,250 specta-
tors, both the Broncos and
Jacks put on a high scoring
performance.
In the first half, both
teams battled back and
forth. The Jacks went into
halftime with a 33-32 lead.
The Green and Gold got
off to a quick start in the
first five minutes of the
second half, as it went on
a 14-6 run to take the lead.
In the next five minutes, the
Jacks went on a 19-9 run to
regain the lead.
CPP then went on a 31-
18 run in the last 10 min-
utes of the game to seal the
game. The Green and Gold
had several players that
contributed to the game in
significant ways.
Faison was dominant
throughout the game both
offensively and defen-
sively. Faison filled the
stats sheet after scoring 22
points on a 7-for-8 shoot-
ing night to go along with
nine rebounds, seven as-
sists, two blocks and one
steal.
“He had a great game,
and those are the games he
needs to have,” said Ka-
mansky. “He made good
decisions on when to pass
and when to score.”
“I was just picking and
choosing my spots and us-
ing my teammates,” said
Faison. “I’m just trying to
do my job.”
Senior guard Barry Bell
contributed to the team in
a big way, after scoring 14
points on 5-for-10 from the
field to go along with seven
assists and five rebounds.
“Barry is always a gam-
er,” said Faison. “He’s al-
ways making plays for us,
and you can always count
on Barry to make the right
play at the right time.”
“Barry again led both
teams on both sides of the
court,” said Kamansky.
“Barry and Jordan are a
good 1-2 punch.”
The Green and Gold had
other several players in
double figures, as sopho-
more guard Daylan Law-
rence finished the game
with 16 points on a 6-for-
10 shooting night. Sopho-
more guard Jeremy Dennis
added 13 points to go along
with seven rebounds.
CPP was efficient on of-
fense the whole game, as it
finished the game shooting
53.7 percent from the field.
“That’s not really our
style, but it called for it to-
night,” said Faison. “We’re
a real adapted team, so if
we need to play defense, we
play defense. If we need to
score, we can score — just
whatever it takes to win.”

The Cal Poly Pomona
women’s basketball team
overcame a double-digit
deficit in the second half,
with a strong defensive per-
formance against the Hum-
boldt St¬ate Jacks on Satur-
day, and it prevailed with a
51-38 victory at home.
CPP now holds a 6-12
record, with a 4-7 record
in the California Collegiate
Athletic Association.
“I’m really proud of our
team,” said Head Coach
Danelle Bishop. “It was just
a good collaborated team
effort. It was fun to see.”
In the first half the Bron-
cos got off to a slow start,
after shooting 26.1 percent
from the field on just six
baskets made. CPP headed
into halftime down 25-15.
Bishop sent a strong mes-
sage to her team before
heading into the second
half.
“Quit worrying about the
offensive end, and get back
on defense,” said Bishop.
CPP responded with a
solid third quarter, as it was
able to cut the lead by half.
The Broncos headed into
the fourth quarter down 36-
31.
In the fourth quarter, the
Green and Gold came from
a double-digit deficit to tie
the game at 36-36. Mo-
ments later, junior guard
Marshanique Hall drained
a three-point shot to give
her team the lead for the re-
mainder of the game.
“She’s one of those play-
ers I trust,” said Bishop.
“She took it: she was confi-
dent, and it went in.”
The fourth quarter was
the difference of the game,
as the Broncos held their op-
ponents to just two points.
CPP’s strong defense kept
the Jacks at 18.5 percent for
the game.
The Broncos were going
in strong to the basket and
being physical in the second
half, as the team scored 20
points in the fourth quarter.
The Green and Gold got
a strong effort from senior
center Mary Williams, af-
ter scoring a team-high 13
points, nine rebounds and
two blocks.
“She was outstanding,”
said Bishop. “Tonight she
just put the team on her
back, and it was a tremen-
dous effort.
Freshman guard Jackie
Ricketson was efficient for
the Broncos, as she contrib-
uted 12 points on a 4-for-7
shooting night to go along
with five rebounds.
“Jackie is one of our hard-
est workers,” said Bishop.
“She was very successful,
and that bothers the other
team.”
The Broncos outrebound-
ed the Jacks 42-34.
“Tonight, I thought they
really believed in them-
selves and believed in their
teammates,” said Bishop.
“I think that’s a huge part
of any sport that you play,
so tonight we really showed
our togetherness.”

If we need to score, we can score — just whatever it takes to win.” Men’s basketball gets back to winning ways By MIGUEL LOPEZ Staff Writer ZORAN LIU-MOY / The Poly Post Senior forward Jordan Faison pushing the ball down the court for the Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball team against the Humboldt State Jacks. sports@thepolypost.com Reach Miguel Lopez at UpcomingUpcoming GamesGames Thursday, Jan. 28 / 7:30 p.m. at Kellogg Arena Saturday, Jan. 30 / 7:30 p.m. at Kellogg Arena Thursday, Jan. 28 / 5:30 p.m. at Kellogg Arena Men’s Basketball Saturday, Jan. 30 / 5:30 p.m. at Kellogg Arena Women’s Basketball MatchMatch ResultsResults Saturday, Jan. 23 Humboldt State 76 Saturday, Jan. 23 38 Men’s Basketball Women’s Basketball VS VS VS VS Pack The Stands Night Pack The Stands Night VS Cal Poly Pomona 86 - VS Cal Poly Pomona 51 - Humboldt State The Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half, with a strong defensive per- formance against the Hum- boldt St¬ate Jacks on Satur- day, and it prevailed with a 51-38 victory at home.
