OBJECTIVES
Overview
Action research is a surprisingly rich and vast methodology in terms of its approach.
It is a useful methodology for counselors who desire to improve othersâ lives through
collaborative research in which the researcher, clients, and community partners
share a stake in the problem and solution. The purpose of this chapter is to introduce
counselors to action research methods by describing the historical influences, key
concepts, and essential components of the action research process. Two essential
approaches to action research are identified. One approach emphasizes practitioner
development, and the other focuses on social action within the surrounding
community. This chapter will challenge you to consider what domain of intervention
you would like to engage in (individual or social) as well the type of research design
that fits with your research goals. This chapter includes various examples and steps
to help you complete an action research project. The final example in this chapter
focuses on steps a school counselor can take to complete an action research
project; however, you may find this applicable to a variety of areas of counseling.
