2. Key component: Suspense
Suspense is crucial if you want to make a good thriller
movie, it generates excitement in the viewer which
makes them want to carry on watching the movie.
Suspense creates key feelings in the people who
experience it: aprehension, uncertainty, anticipation,
tension and anxiety. These feelings come from the
mystery aspect of suspense which should develop as the
thriller narrative develops. The mystery aspect makes the
viewer think about certain outcomes rather than paying
attention to what's actually happening. This is key
because the viewer is more engaged in the film.
3. Key component: Themes
and characters
The most used methods in crime thrillers are mainly things like gangs, heists and kidnappings. More common in
mystery thrillers are murders, investigation and the whodunit technique.
Character normally include people like gangsters, assassins, inspectors and police officers. Then we also et the
innocent victims whom the hero is trying to save. In most cases the protagonist will have a side kick of some sort or
maybe he is in love with a woman friend. The protagonist is normally a day to day ordinary person and then
something changes and he leaves everything behind to become a hero.
The primary aspects of the thriller genre:
- The protagonist faces death.
- The force of the antagonist must be greater than the protagonists.
- The protagonist is on a quest to achieve something.
- The narrative is dominated by the protagonist.
- The protagonist and antagonist must have have some kind of confrontation/battle
4. Key component: Story and
setting
The protagonist is always set with a problem in thriller movies. He's always having to overcome lots of obstacles to get to his goal. This happens in all the
thriller genres. The story in thriller genres is mainly laid out like this:

5. Key component: Setting
The setting for thrillers is normally a very big urban
environment like New York City. In some cases the
film might be produced in an exotic place like a
remote island or a desert. It is important that we get
the message that the place is important to the
protagonist.
