2. General Overview
There are many different types of thriller films from
Batman to Gone Girl. Many of them thrive off of building
tension and creating suspense. Thriller films are very
common and tend to follow very similar narrative
sequences. However some differ from the norm. A lot of
thriller films are crime related, thus, involving
investigations and detective work as well as murder.
Therefore, a lot of people are attracted to the idea of the
unknown. This is what gives you that ‘thrill’ when watching
these sorts of movies.
3. Narrative conventions
In thrillers, You will commonly see main protagonists put
into tough situations from the very beginning. Sometimes
they may be presented with the issue of a murder or crime
scene. As well as this you have main protagonists
attempting to stop evil schemes. The thriller genre very
much sums up Toderov’s theory. The idea of the disruption
means that main characters have to sort things out. This
usually involves multiple chase and fight scenes that result
in final stand offs. There is always that sense of fear,
mystery and darkness.
4. Typical Characters
Main Protagonist- This will be the character that is
involved in sorting out the disruption or problem. This may
be a detective or superhero character (i.e.Batman)
Main Antagonists- A character involved in a certain crime
or head of group of antagonists. You tend not to see
much of them throughout the film but they tend to be
either well dressed or even at times scruffy to the extent to
which they look homeless.
6. Sub Genres
Due to the wide variety of possibilities in Thriller films,
there are many different types of thriller films. Some are
much faster, some create far more suspense. Examples of
sub-genres are: Action, crime, conspiracy, psychological,
romantic and spy thrillers.
