Before lit review, morphed into
ESL/International Student Program
After lit review, our program transformed
once again into something close to the SVP
we have now.

Google
Flat organizational structure
Lower-level needs (food, sleep, even haircuts)
are taken care of for free
Childcare is available on-site, and best health
insurance available in Silicon Valley
Google invites input from all employees on all
projects
Employees have 20% of work time to devote
to pet projects

What is it?
“SVP is an interdisciplinary educational
program designed to help students at a mid-
sized, public university gain valuable, real
world experience while dually helping their
institution and local community.”
9. Student Volunteer Program:
What does it look like?
Very flat organizational structure
Input accepted from all students and staff
Students and staff are encouraged to set
their own educational goals each semester
All projects are constantly evaluated to see
that they are achieving intended outcomes
Community partners are invited to planning
sessions once per year to help integrate
volunteer efforts into existing community
initiatives
