1. MSU Honored with
Kentucky Aerospace
Achievement Award
October 29, 2014 - Morehead State
University has been chosen as one of the
esteemed recipients of the 2014
Kentucky Aerospace Achievement
Award. The award is attributed to efforts
of the MSU Space Science Center, and
will be given at a formal banquet on
Nov. 1 in Lexington at the Aviation
Museum of Kentucky, at Bluegrass
Airport.
This incredible award is handed out only
to the most outstanding aerospace
organizations within the
Commonwealth. Its presentation will be
accompanied by MSU’s honorable
induction into The Kentucky Aviation
Hall of Fame alongside the other four
honorees at the ceremony.
Dr. Ben Malphrus, chair of the MSU
Department of Earth and Space
Sciences, was very proud when he heard
of the accomplishment. "I am delighted
for Morehead State University and the
Space Science Center faculty, staff and
students," he said. "The Space Science
Center is unique in that all of our major
space programs are implemented by
teams that include aerospace industry
and international partners working
closely with our staff and particularly
with our students- undergraduate
students are intimately involved in the
design, fabrication, testing and on-orbit
operation of our space assets."
The Space Science Center is a division
of the Department of Earth and Space
Sciences in MSU’s College of Science
and Technology. The center, at 235
Martindale Drive, is a $15.6 million
support facility that contains classrooms,
offices, and a wide range of laboratories
for research to be conducted in. The
center is a state-of-the-art building that
includes the control center for the 21-
meter space antenna system positioned
on the ridge top above Nunn Hall, a
space system development laboratory,
RF and electronics laboratories, a
rooftop antenna test range, digital Star
Theater, and anechoic chambers that
mimic the electromagnetic environment
found in space.
While studying there, students have
access to a wide range of academic
courses and programs to help prepare for
careers in aerospace and space systems
or advanced degrees in the space science
fields. It is one of the five programs
available in the United States in higher
education. Through diligent work,
Students may achieve a Bachelor of
Science degree in space science, a
Bachelor of Science degree in Physics
with an area of concentration in
astrophysics, and newly available is a
Master of Science degree in space
systems engineering.
The Aviation Museum of Kentucky is a
non-profit institution and is the official
aviation museum of the Commonwealth
of Kentucky. The Aviation Achievement
Award has recognized honorees since
1996 for various contributions to
aerospace and aviation.
