Kentucky Virtual
Library Introduces
New Search Tool and
Naming Contest
Mar. 3, 2013 - The Kentucky Virtual
Library has decided to introduce an
innovative way to browse their databases
and simplify the research students
perform. Their brand new EBSCO
Discovery Service will allow people to
search across all of the hundreds of
journals, magazines, encyclopedias, and
citation dictionaries that KYVL provides
the Commonwealth access to, and will
also increase fundability through the use
of a customizable webpage powered by
an advanced search system.
KYVL is an operating unit of the proud
Council on Postsecondary Education, a
vast, statewide consortium which helps
to serve and service libraries of the
state’s public universities and colleges,
as well as the community and technical
college system, over 30 independent
colleges and universities, it’s public and
private K-12 schools, public town and
city libraries, and hospitals. The KYVL
system brings member libraries together
to help lower costs of books and
improve efficiencies through the use of
joint purchasing and sharing resources
amongst one another.
With the addition of the EBSCO
Discovery Service, the Kentucky Virtual
Library’s high-quality resources are now
accessible with ease via a single search
portal. In addition, KYVL has also
created helpful boxes that group related
assets and information resources
together organized by age and subject
interest. This will allow for easier
retrieval of magazine and journal
articles, E-books, and newspapers.
As KYVL Director Enid Wohlstein
states "The EDS Service gives citizens
of all ages a single entry point to
discover and retrieve articles, E-books,
primary sources and other materials they
need to meet their needs for school,
work and life. EBSCO is a committed
partner to KYVL’s mission of providing
equitable access to high quality
information in an easy manner,"
KYVL has decided to host a contest
among students to give a proper name to
the new search tool. Information and
details on the contest as well as the entry
form can be located at the following web
address:
http://www.kyvl.org/NametheSearchCon
test.shtm
Entries for the contest will be accepted
for the remainder of the month’s
duration, lasting until the end of March
2013. The contest is open to all legal
Kentucky residents not an employee or
related to an employee of the KYVL
who are interested (though participants
under the age of 18 will require the aid
of a parent or guardian to submit their
entry.)
The winning name will be selected at the
end of the contest to receive the grand
prize of an Apple iPad AVR ($400) In
addition a second prize of a Google
Nexus ($200) will be awarded based on
the winner of a random drawing contest.
A CODi Dispatch Vertical Messenger
AVR ($60) is also intended to be
awarded. Other prizes may be
announced as well in time.
Those whose names are chosen will be
notified that their entry was selected by
the KYVL via email or US mail with a
subsequent meeting conducted over
phone or email. Winners will be asked to
attend a meeting of the KYVL alliance
to receive their prize in person.
