2. Language Development
What is English Language Development (EDL)?
Teaching English Language Learners to process early childhood language
comprehension and expression to the English language
It help transfer the knowledge and activate prior knowledge
3. Stages of Language Acquisition
● Pre- Production - Silent Period
● Early Production - Start using short words and sentence, but listens more than responding
● Speech Emergent- Starts putting longer sentences together with errors, but still relies on context clues, visual cues and
previous knowledge
● Intermediate Fluency- Talking in the second language is fluent, vocabulary increased, will display high order thing,
but may have difficulty with some unknown expressions
● Advance Fluency - Proficient and comfortable speaking in the second language. Will demonstrate higher order
thinking and development of CALP (Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency)

understanding. Its enhances their comprehension
and decrease anxiety within a classroom
environment
7. Scaffolding
❖ Scaffolding help builds interest of the content while the educator breaks down the content in smaller
parts before, during and after instruction.
❖ It motivates students to interact and participate in lesson
❖ Allow the English Language Learner self evaluate their works
❖ Helps develops and connect new content to instruction
❖ Builds curiosity and encourages active listening and oral discussions

❖ An educator should set, demonstrated and evaluate learning goals throughout the
year.
❖ Always Collect data (Formal and informal)
❖ Chunk the lessons and instructions
❖ Use Discussion boards and exit slips
❖ Allow students to text to speech instruments
❖ Familiarize and support students cultures and languages
10. Key Points as an Educator
It essential for educators to promote safe learning environment for English Language Learners. It is also
important to include reading, writing, speaking and listening in every lesson, because it allows ELL students
to effectively evaluate their process of learning. Also by incorporating reading, writing, speaking and
listening skills into the content allows students focus on fluency, decoding, vocabulary and pronunciation
which essentially promotes proficiency and CALP
11. Key Points as an Educator
Educators should use various strategies to enhance ELL students’ comprehension,
critical thinking, and problem skills. Furthermore, they connect new content to
prior knowledge by scaffolding instruction. Graphic organizers, interactive games,
and cooperative learning motivate students to interact and participate not only
with lesson being taught, but also with their fellow classmates.
