THE PROJECT
The PTA at the Aldo Leopold Elementary School has decided that the existing computer lab should be re-purposed into a more collaborative, creative, alternative learning space. The vision is of a place where kids think and brainstorm in new and alternative ways, both alone or in groups. The space will have access to iPadsand other technology in order to provide connectivity and opportunities for digital exploration. The team was looking for various ideas to accomplish their goals and were additionally open for new ideas for utilizing the space.
The Leopold Elementary School learning lounge design will inspire the students to explore, analyze, create, learn, and achieve by…
•Going beyond the traditional boundaries of education and allowing for a variety of opportunities and activities
•Accommodating multiple modes of learning in order to maximize the learning experience: large work, personal work, collaborative, private, cozy
•Providing zones of choice for students, while allowing access for teachers to mentor students
•Allowing for easy movement of furniture and use of technology in order to promote interaction collaboration, and comfort
•Offering customization for the needs of the instructor or community

6. THE PROJECT
Mixed*bag brings to life the concept of the “fourth place” work environment—a co-working enabler. It attracts and blends together those who desire to conduct business in a space that is designed to cultivate interaction and collaboration. This model environment can be described as a form of social-networking, but in a face-to-face format. From entrepreneurs to freelancers, mixed*bag is an available space in which to perform work, promoting a sense of community and networking opportunities. The goal is to spark innovation among the diverse, loosely- connected professional users of the space. However, Mixed*bag is not only a facility for gathering; it also provides a full- service, professional business environment, offering wireless internet, technical resources, mail service, beverages and snacks, lockers, and secretarial support to its members. It is the answer to many of the challenges that traditional office and home office environments face, while nourishing accelerated serendipity.

20. DESIGN CONCEPT
Le RivageHotel and Conference Center provides an elegant atmosphere for the business traveler while still providing an abundance of amenities to allow the guest to conduct business as necessary. The conference accommodations provide comfortable and appropriate arrangements in various formats to fit the desired need.
The hotel touts a transitional design that verges into the contemporary realm with an abundance of dark wood that provides the rustic feel of the timbers once used to build river boats. Going beyond the needs of the business traveler, it provides the feel of being at a resort when it comes time to relax. Therefore, Le Rivageis a wonderful place to stay and enjoy the city of Chicago, with pleasant memories drawing guests back again.

22. THE PROJECT
The client is a female who lives alone in a 1960’s ranch home. She is a very active retiree who enjoys traveling as well as entertaining family and friends. In addition, she is an avid sports fan. Specifics of the home and project include:
Ranch style, very traditional
Kitchen had been updated some years ago, but is dated
Wallpaper and borders added at some point
New furnishings in second bedroom
Sun room added on back of home (used three seasons of the year)
Windows have been replaced as well as the blinds
Lower level has a guest bedroom, bathroom, and laundry area
Back yard is relatively small, with a storage shed
8-foot ceilings
Hardwood flooring thought to be under most of the carpeting
Fireplace in living room is utilized
Dining room not used often—eating occurs in living room in front of television
Bedroom furniture, dining room furniture should remain
Dining room rug as well as some of the tables and plant stands (made by her father) can be moved, but should remain
The client would like a spacious master bedroom that serves as a retreat and has an on-suite bathroom with a spa-like atmosphere. She is especially looking forward to a custom, walk-in shower with a bench. She is also open to other updates and changes to the floor plan of her home that she plans to remain in as long as she’s able.

28. DESIGN CONCEPT
The Wendorff kitchen will be redesigned and updated to offer the client more space and options to use his kitchen in ways that fit his needs. It will offer more space, for storage and cooking, with the addition of more cabinets, more efficient use of space, updated appliances, updated furnishings, and sufficient lighting.
It highlights a modern design in the choice of cabinets with clean lines, and the use of a gray finish on the base cabinets with the low-grain beech on the wall units. The peninsula offers both a place to eat breakfast and lunch as well as a center point between the kitchen and the family room. Occupants can be seated at the counter and interact with both someone in the kitchen as well as someone in the family room.
In addition, the half wall into the dining room opens up the space to tie the living room, dining room, kitchen and family room together. The more open space will reduce the feel of small rooms. The flooring will be another agent that ties the spaces together as it will be a consistent surface that will bring continuity from the hall, to the kitchen, and into the family room. These modifications will make the space more pleasing to the eye and more functional, as well as more conducive to entertaining.

33. The project
The project entailed the design of the first floor of a new construction home, including floor plan layout. The homeowners were looking for the home to be:
•Casual and comfortable with finishes and furniture to accommodate the clients’ young children
•Open with a central living space
•Inclusive of a working island with seating to allow for family involvement and to allow entertaining
•Colorful in a moderate sense, with a dark and light presence—white trim, dark doors, and white cabinets
•Durable with hardwood flooring that will withstand the wear and tear of pets
•Conducive in layout for entertaining
•Functional and convenient in regards to the laundry room and mud room
