Emergency psychology for leaders
Think about solutions rather tan blame or disaster. Maintain serenity against
challenges. Encourage others to overcome catastrophes. Preserves the ability
to analyze and solve problems. Help yourself and help other around you.
Positive attitude
Filter information
Take time to calmly and logically process information. Don’t believe
everything, avoid hoaxes at all costs. Ask yourself the key question:
Does it help?
Emotional intelligence
Get to know yourself better. Distinguish which emotions help you and which
trap you. Which ones you can control and which ones dominate you. Learn
how to manage them as your own business. And above all, do not contribute
to spread fear and negativity.
?
Beware of self-deception
Minimize confirmation bias that makes you see what you want and hides what you
don’t. When you analyze information, if you are optimistic you will tend to deny
threats; on the contrary, if you are pessimistic, you will tend to confirm your
apocalyptic vision. Use objective analysis methods that help you see reality in a
complete and balanced way: diagrams, pros and cons analysis, SWOT, etc.
Work in team
This is not the time for lone heroes, it is time to contribute and cooperate.
Teamwork is not demonstrated by looking at what others do or don't do, or who
fails or is guilty. Teamwork is helping and asking for help, it is putting effort and
being aware of what we can contribute from each one to all
Take decisions
Take responsibility and risk. No one in history has ever experienced this moment.
No one knows what the real good decision is. Give yourself a chance to decide
with permission to fail. Watch out for the feeling of paralysis out of fear or guilt
about being wrong. In these circumstances, we cannot think of good or bad
decisions, nobody knows yet. Anyone else in our place can hit or miss but, who
knows beforehand?
An opportunity to learn
Learn from the extraordinary experience, from oneself and from the others. We
have never experienced anything like this and probably we will not have
another similar opportunity to acquire what these circumstances can teach us.
Alert to opportunities
Emergency situations tend to focus our attention on threats, however, sometimes
opportunities also arise and will be there for those who know how to discover them.
Let us be open to discover and take advantage of them.
In short, get out of the circle of worries and into the circle of influence
and proactivity.
Remember:
In the storm, it is not the force of the wind, nor the bravery of the waves that guides
the boat, but the steadiness and skill of the helmsman.
